The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a rocky few years. After the success of Avengers: Endgame, the MCU has had a few big projects, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool and Wolverine. However, the broader story of the multiverse saga failed to capture audiences’ interest in the way that Thanos did, which led Disney to course correct with the upcoming .
The latest trailer for Doomsday debuted at CinemaCon last week, released only to attendees of the event. Much was revealed about the film by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, , and star Robert Downey Jr, such as that Doomsday will pick up right where Avengers: Endgame left off.
The trailer highlighted some of this, showing the return of Steve Rogers while also teasing a battle between the X-Men and the Avengers. Mystique was seen posing as Florence Pugh’s Yelena, and shots of Cyclops and other famous characters in the respective groups were also shown. Narrating the trailer was Thor, who warns of the impending threat.
This was a great trailer, perfectly teasing the new film while also being careful not to reveal too much. The size and scale of the film was also shown, while attendees also got a look at Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom, including his unique accent (but not his face without the mask). Even though it wasn’t released to the public, the trailer still appears to have reignited interest in the franchise and given fans of the MCU some hope that the series will get back on track with Doomsday.
Doctor Doom’s Costume Design
There were a few shots shown in this trailer that gave viewers a good look at Doctor Doom’s outfit. since Downey Jr. was announced as the actor playing the character, and although promotional products have given audiences some clue as to what Doom’s appearance will be, exactly how the villain would suit up was still unclear prior to this trailer.
The best part of Doom’s outfit in this trailer is its accuracy to the villain’s comic book appearance. The mask in particular looks like it was pulled straight from the comics, which makes it a great callback for longtime fans of the character. The mask also still looks threatening, making it clear that Doom is the villain, which is important given that Downey Jr., who previously played the MCU’s main hero in Iron Man, is now portraying Victor Von Doom.
Thor’s Speech
Thor narrates the trailer in the new film, adding a sense of gravity to the proceedings as he describes the impending threat that is coming to the multiverse. His speech is as follows:
“I've fought with many warriors in my time. They were stronger than all of us put together and they died they died facing enemies that scared me far less than this one does. Everything that they sacrificed will be for nothing if we do not stand together. Our aside your petty squabbles and resume nothing except this. If you return you will return as brothers and sisters. Mark my words, we are going to need a miracle.”
This speech is said with plenty of raw emotion from Chris Hemsworth, who is now the older and more experienced hero in an MCU full of relative newcomers. The speech pairs perfectly with the footage shown, adding to the weight of the story and making the viewer feel as if
Teasing X-Men Vs. The Avengers
The Russo Brothers teased that Doomsday would feature the and the trailer at CinemaCon shows just that. The trailer does a perfect job of teasing this battle, showing just enough to get audiences excited while also still holding the biggest events for the actual film. If this trend continues with the film’s marketing, this means that Doomsday will be a surprising and unexpected story in a way similar to Endgame.
For fans who grew up watching the original X-Men films, this trailer was likely a bit of a dream come true. The mutants are now in a world with other heroes, and not only that, but are coming face to face with them in a battle as well. Showing this also creates more questions about the plot and how the X-Men and the Avengers get caught up with one another when Doctor Doom is presumably causing havoc, which makes the story and the film even more intriguing.
The Atmosphere
One of the very best things about this trailer is the atmosphere. Thor’s speech plays a huge part in this, as does the footage shown. The music is also a major player in creating the atmosphere, which feels akin to the seriousness of Infinity War and Endgame. The atmosphere of the trailer makes it immediately clear that huge events will happen in Doomsday, from character deaths to universal destruction, adding to the stakes of the story.
The Scale
Speaking of stakes, the scale of the trailer was another huge takeaway. The quick look at the film showed just how many heroes are going up against Doom, from the X-Men to the Fantastic Four to the New Avengers (and more), which, just like Infinity War and Endgame, makes Doomsday feel like a huge, can’t miss event. The visuals also play a role in this, showing worlds being destroyed and the full powers of some heroes, like Cyclops, on full display.

Having these different characters interact with one another also makes the scale feel greater. For years, fans wondered if they would ever get to see the Avengers versus the X-Men, or even the two groups interacting in some way, and Doomsday makes that fan wish become a reality, which makes the film feel even bigger in scale. Also, having characters like Steve Rogers return makes the scale and stakes feel higher, as if he had a real reason to do so.
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18, 2026.
