Every cat lover’s heart shattered into thousands of pieces during the opening scene of (2026), when the lasagna-loving cat was shown as a kitten being abandoned by his father in an alleyway before meeting and being adopted by Jon Arbuckle. The emotional moment left many fans craving more baby Garfield, and their wish has now been granted. The orange tabby now has an official prequel, Baby Garfield, and fans are already obsessed.

BOOM! Studios’ with the release of the first issue of what is planned to be a four-part mini-series anthology that will feature various writers and artists. The series focuses on Garfield as a “tiny troublemaker” kitten before he became the lasagna-loving legend that fans know and love today. Baby Garfield #1 features two short stories. The first, titled “Baby Garfield’s First Word,” is brought to fans by the creative team of writer Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes) and artist Asia Simone (Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Wreck & Roll), and it captures the milestone of Garfield’s very first word.

The second short story in the issue is hilariously and aptly titled “Baby Garfield’s First Hairball.” As you probably guessed, it commemorates the moving and iconic milestone of baby Garfield hacking up his first hairball. This short story is brought to life by the creative duo of writer Michael Northrop (Dear Justice League) and artist Rob Justus ().

Readers have flocked to League of Comic Geeks to share their ratings and commentary, and the first issue has earned a solid 4 out of 5 stars, with an overall reception described as “very positive.”

BOOM! Studios has also shared the solicitations for issues #2 and #3 of the series, which will be released on April 29, 2026, and June 10, 2026, respectively. For example, every Garfield fan knows that the feline hates Mondays, and with Stephanie Cooke and artist Whitney Gardner contributing a short story titled “Baby Garfield's First Monday” in issue #2, it is clear that Garfield’s Monday-hating trait will be getting the spotlight.

Likewise, Brittney L. Williams will be writing and drawing the art for the short story “Baby Garfield's First Lasagna,” which clearly pays tribute to one of the tabby cat’s most iconic personality traits.
