The R-rated horror movie that Stephen King's son ensured came to fruition is coming to soon, which could be a major game changer for the film and the wider franchise around it. Stephen King's name is one that's naturally synonymous with horror thanks to his contributions to the genre over the years, and the range of adaptations of his work that have released during this time.

Thankfully for horror fans, King's penchant for producing uniquely striking horror stories is one that his son, Joe Hill, shares. Hill has written some terrifying and compelling stories thus far, with books like NOS4A2 and Heart-Shaped Box having established his own talents, and Hill's short story collections 20th Century Ghosts and Strange Weather also garnering some notable positive reception.

Hill's work has also been adapted for the big screen, with one such movie adaptation set to make its way to Netflix in the coming weeks, which presents a new opportunity for the film series to further prove itself, and could make it more likely for the franchise to get another follow-up release further down the line, depending on how audiences react to the movie when it arrives on the streaming platform.

May 2026 sees some major movies and shows come to Netflix, with one of the biggest being that of Black Phone 2.

Though The Black Phone was a reasonable success, according to writer and Stephen King's son Joe Hill - who wrote the original short story itself - director Scott Derrickson and Derrickson's fellow movie co-writer C. Robert Cargill "didn’t know if they wanted to do another one", with Hill explaining in an interview with that their minds had been changed by Hill's pitch for the sequel film's story.

The 2026 sequel to 2026's The Black Phone expands on the movie and original short story, delving into what happened to protagonist Finney Blake after he was able to kill his kidnapper, The Grabber, and escape his grasp thanks to the help of some ghosts of the killer's previous victims. Though Blake is free of The Grabber for several years, the sequel sees the specter of the villain return to haunt the character once more.

After originally releasing theatrically in October 2026, Black Phone 2 is set to release on Netflix on May 16, 2026, providing the streaming service another addition to its horror roster, and providing Black Phone 2 with a new opportunity to be watched or rewatched by viewers who may otherwise have not done so - which could potentially be the difference between Black Phone 3 happening or not happening depending on how the film is received on the platform.

Black Phone 2's Netflix Release Could Help Make Black Phone 3 A Reality

The matter of whether Black Phone 2 would be succeeded by a or other further installments was stated by those tied to the project to be linked to its fiscal success before the film itself even debuted. This makes sense, given the had extended past the parameters of the original short story itself, though continuing on did align with Hill's prior considerations about potentially making the short story into a novel.

While the sequel brought in a slightly lower box office than the original, it still made well over $100 million (with a $132 million worldwide box office as per ), and garnered positive critical reviews, showing the franchise had stuck the landing despite continuing past the story of the original source material. That said, it does seem as though this lower overall gross could have hampered the chances of is getting another future follow-up.

However, this position also makes the matter of how Black Phone 2 fares on Netflix all the more potentially fruitful. Many movies have seen major resurgences thanks to their re-release on services like Netflix, and a revival for Black Phone 2 - or the series simply reentering the pop culture sphere as a result - could well be the extra step that helps convince salient parties to give another installment a shot.

With Black Phone 2 being three weeks away from hitting Netflix, only time will tell how it's received on the platform, and what its prospective popularity there is like in both the short and long term. Either way, hopefully Black Phone 2's arrival on Netflix can allow a whole new audience to experience the film, this time from the comfort of their own homes.
