took the gaming world by storm last year, scooping up more Game Awards than any release in history and performing beyond even the wildest of predictions from experts.
The game was praised for everything from its impressive storytelling to its beautiful soundtrack and intuitive . All of those successes mean that thoughts among the community have turned to what exactly developer Sandfall Interactive plans to do next, and they have started dropping subtle hints here and there.
Is Clair Obscur Getting A Sequel?
Over on Reddit, one user a post from , in which they interviewed the developers behind . When responding to a question about what the next game might hold for players, lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen shared the following insight:
"It's always in the back of my mind that we have a lot of fans now, and they have certain expectations and certain feelings towards the game. Creatively, we've always let our North Star be our own personal taste in terms of what we think is cool, what it is we enjoy and want to see. I've seen too many TV shows and books be swayed trying to please a lot of people, and in the process you end up losing the heart of what's there. So [we] feel like we need to trust our instincts and continue to trust the vision behind the studio."
It was enough for the responses to start a serious debate about what exactly the next game should be, with some favoring an entirely original story set in the same universe.
"‘Clair Obscur’ will probably be like Final Fantasy, where each game is a new story and world but with some of the same lore carrying over (for Clair Obscur it will probably be the Painters and Writers," one comment .
"Making a sequel to this game would be like making a sequel to Outer Wilds or Toy Story 3. It just would make absolutely no sense given the finality of the story. I would be so disappointed in them as storytellers if they did that," another .

"I guarantee you an E33 sequel won't capture the same magic because of the expectations that people will now have for a sequel and the fact that the plot twist is known. Better to work on something completely new rather than try and milk E33 success," a third put .
Don't Expect The Same Characters
Whatever Sandfall Interactive does decide to do next, there is an implicit pressure that's applied when a new developer lands their first game with such a monumental splash. That in mind, it's probably best to give them the space to make something as great as Expedition 33 (again), and then we'll all come out of the equation as winners. Just don't expect the same characters to crop up, for obvious reasons.
