Code Geass is a masterful anime series. In just two seasons, it cemented itself as near required viewing for every fan of anime. Code Geass stars Lelouch vi Britannia as an exiled prince who wants to take down the country that turned its back on him. After being given the powerful Geass, he's able to, manipulating reality with ease. It's a powerful tool in and of itself, but it's Lelouch's immense intelligence that really brings it to life.

Code Geass is a story about manipulation just as much as it is outright power. It's a thriller from the very beginning, and the series only gets more interesting over time.

There Aren't Many Great Psychologically Thrilling Anime Series

It's not surprising that . Shōnen and romance series are fairly abundant; at their core, they don't need much. Shōnen series usually star a hopeful protagonist, a darker side character who assists the protagonist, and a villain for the heroes to fight against.

Romance anime follows a similar path. A good romance series stars two characters who develop feelings for one another, fall in love, and learn more about one another over time. Psychological thrillers are inherently more complicated, and they're much harder to truly flesh out than most other genres.

Good psychological anime series usually end up being some of . Steins;Gate, Monster, Death Note, and Neon Genesis Evangelion are all widely considered top-tier, and it's easy to see why. These series are ambitious and capable of pulling off exactly what they intend to.

A good psychological anime only comes around every few years, and luckily, Code Geass' successor is not only here, but at its absolute peak.

Season 4 Might Be Classroom of the Elite at Its Best

. For years, fans watched Ayanokoji hide in the middle of the pack, never standing out one way or another. Frankly, he didn't have to, as he was able to manipulate the people around him with little to no effort. After another student from the horrific White Room has enrolled in the Advanced Nurturing High School, forcing Ayanokoji's hand.

Classroom of the Elite Is the Rightful Heir to Code Geass' Throne

A Still From Classroom of the Elite Season 4 Kiyotaka Ayanokoji's poker face

Classroom of the Elite is the modern-day psychological thriller to watch. There aren't many good psychologically-based anime series, and after years, it feels like Code Geass fans finally have something to watch that will invoke the same feelings as Lelouch and his ability to think several steps ahead of his enemies.

Both Lelouch and Ayanokoji are two of . They're able to manipulate the world around them with ease, and while Lelouch has an actual supernatural ability, it feels like Ayanokoji does too. He's so smart that even viewers have a hard time keeping up with him, and there's no student at the Advanced Nurturing High School that can compare.

There isn't a lot of action in Classroom of the Elite, and that's perfect. Almost all the conflict is intellectual, and there really isn't another series that can pull that feat off. Classroom of the Elite is the best series to watch for anyone who likes Code Geass because of its protagonist, the world the series exists within, and how mentally stimulating the franchise can be.
