fans have been , as the original NES release proliferated to tons of other platforms. Over the years, Square Enix jumped from the NES to the SNES, then to the PlayStation, before settling on a multiplatform strategy.

Now, you can pick up pretty much any Final Fantasy on any platform, barring a few exceptions like timed exclusivity. Given how many remakes and remasters there are of the classic series, the world is your oyster if you're a fan. Square Enix has been prepping people for a full-on shift to the PlayStation 5 for a while now, and PS4 fans can be considered on notice.

Over on , Square Enix just dropped a warning for any fans who are still using their PlayStation 4. In fact, their days of support are now numbered, and we have a window. While it's not ideal, at least we have an idea of what to expect in advance.

Live at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest event in Anaheim, California, producer Naoki "Yoshi P" Yoshida took the stage to talk about the future of the game. He unveiled the new expansion, Evercold, which is due out in January 2027, and explained some massive changes coming to FF14, including a surprising overhaul of the combat system.

Near the end of the presentation, Yoshida got to the system requirements slide, which elicited nervous laughter from the crowd. Funnily enough, he explained that there wouldn't be any major changes to most existing platforms, save for one: the PlayStation 4.

According to the studio, the game is simply getting too big for the PS4 to handle, and there is an end-of-service date in mind. The team will try to support the PS4 through "8.3," the third major content patch for the Evercold expansion, which kicks off the 8.0 era.

It might sound sudden, but it's a huge warning window, all things considered. Evercold doesn't arrive until 2027, and 8.3 will come months after that. Based on Yoshida's wording, you should have "around two years" to save up for a PlayStation 5.

It's refreshing to see a company be so blunt about when service for a specific console might end. A lot of folks cheered the decision, as it will let Final Fantasy 14 blossom even further from a technical perspective with the development team solely focused on current-generation platforms.

Plus, given the years-long commitment Square Enix made to supporting Final Fantasy 14 at the Anaheim Fan Fest, it seems like the game will be healthy by the time the PlayStation 6 arrives.

You also have another option as of August. Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy 14 will be . In addition to support for PC and Xbox Series X/S, you aren't tethered to a single platform.
