First released way back in 1997 as the seventh main installment in the beloved Final Fantasy franchise, was met with widespread acclaim, and now widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time. Following the story of fan favorite Cloud Strife, we join him as he joins an eco-terrorist organization which plans to stop a world-controlling megacorporation from transferring the planet's life essence into an energy source.

Thanks to its success, it is perhaps no wonder that Square Enix revealed that it would be remaking Final Fantasy 7 by rereleasing the beloved title across a series of three games. Kicking off back in 2026 with the launch of , it was soon followed by in 2026, but fans are still waiting to hear when they can expect the third and final installment.

Well, according to one post recently shared over on , the third entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy could launch as early as next year thanks to an "early 2027" release window. This news comes courtesy of Resetera, who reportedly received this information from somebody who worked on the Square Enix marketing and Summer Game Fest event staff. As such, it is worth taking this news with a pinch of salt. However, the leak does reveal that the third installment, titled Final Fantasy VII Return, is "nearly completed" and its trailer will be shown at this year's Summer Game Fest which takes place on 5 June.

Square Enix proposed it be the final showcase of the event, but the event board declined it for that position, instead opting for an early reveal "excitement-builder". It sounds like they have an even bigger closer for the event and that this year's show is overall the best in years. The trailer will be followed up by a second video of the development team explaining multiple new details. At the end, they will announce a follow-up event will be held by Square Enix directly in the coming months.

The trailer, which will reportedly be released this summer, will reveal that the third Final Fantasy VII Remake entry will include three additional "permanently playable party members" with one being a brand-new addition. Additionally, there will be a new optional combat system named "Active Turn Action." The Developer Interview which will reportedly follow the trailer unveiling will reveal that there will be "over 3x more narrative cinematics as featured in Rebirth in terms of duration" and "over 2x the world size as featured in Rebirth, including ." Not only that, but the trilogy so far will be announced as a bundle, allowing fans to purchase Remake, Rebirth, and Crisis Core Reunion in one collection during the holiday period, allowing them to get ready for the launch of the Final Fantasy VII Remake finale next year.

As mentioned, it is worth taking this leak with a pinch of salt, but there is no denying that the information shared sounds exciting nonetheless. As such, we could be just a year away from seeing how the epic trilogy for Final Fantasy VII Remake comes to an end.
