Warning! Spoilers for Shrinking season 3's finale ahead!And so season 3 comes to a close. This installment of the Apple TV dramedy revolved around the theme of "moving forward," and its ending most certainly delivered in that regard. Each Shrinking character leaped into the next chapter of their journey in this final episode, embracing their scars so that their baggage would no longer hold them back. Of course, it was easier said than done—especially for Jimmy.
Previously, in , everyone but Jimmy began preparations for their new lives. Alice finally graduated from high school and began preparing in earnest to head away for college. Sean accepted Derek's offer to move into his vacant apartment. Brian agreed to temporarily move to Tennessee with Charlie for work. Liz embraced Derek's idea of having adventures together in Barcelona before they officially become grandparents. Gaby officially took over Paul's practice to turn it into a trauma center. Then there was Paul himself, who moved to Connecticut to be near his daughter.
Jimmy didn't adjust particularly well to any of this, but Paul's move was especially hard on him. The timing was bad, since his dad had been in town and spent his entire visit reminding Jimmy just how unavailable he had always been. Jimmy ultimately took the whole thing out on Paul, though his mentor wasn't entirely blameless either. Said and done, Paul left town while still at odds with Jimmy, and that takes us into Shrinking's season 3 finale.
Alice Officially Leaves For Wesleyan University (& Jimmy Is Mostly Fine)
Jimmy does his best in Shrinking season 3, episode 11, "And That's Our Time," to put his big fight with Paul out of his mind and focus on Alice's departure for Wesleyan University. Naturally, he has this grand idea of what their big goodbye will look like. He wants it to be special and emotional, complete with a pre-planned speech that he's sure Alice will remember all her life. Of course, it doesn't quite go that way.
Alice ends up in a fight with Summer just before she leaves town, and Jimmy helps the two best friends work things out (happy he still has some fathering left to do). Part of the solution to their issues is that Summer will fly with Alice to Connecticut, allowing her to help her friend get settled in following a last big adventure together. The problem with this is that Summer is there for Alice and Jimmy's big goodbye, and she doesn't exactly allow for big sentimental moments. This, combined with Alice's excitement and distractibility, means Jimmy has to give up on his big speech. Still, he does his best to let it go.
Gaby Pops The Question To Derek After Finding His Engagement Ring
Another big moment of the is Gaby and Derek's engagement. This relationship has been quite a journey, since Gaby isn't exactly the most romantically available person. She gets spooked easily, but Derek has proven himself extremely patient. We saw quite a while ago that he had purchased a ring for her and was preparing to propose, but given Maya's death, the timing wasn't right. In this last Shrinking season 3 episode, Gaby ends up finding the ring before Derek has the chance to pop the question.
Following a major spiral and another group meeting with her support system, Gaby decides she is ready for the next step. However, she naturally has to claim some control. She pretends to come at Derek in a rage about his plan to propose, but suddenly turns things around by popping the question herself (surrounded by just about everyone Derek knows). Of course, he says yes.
Sean Confesses To Jimmy That He Moved Out Of The Pool House
With everyone preparing to head out on their next big adventures, Sean was a bit worried to tell Jimmy he wouldn't be living in the pool house anymore. By the Shrinking season 3 finale, he had already moved into Derek's apartment. However, he continues pretending that he is sleeping in the pool house for Jimmy's sake. It certainly doesn't help matters when Jimmy expresses his excitement that, despite all the changes, he will still have Sean nearby.
Sean finally finds the courage to tell Jimmy the truth, and the confession leads to one of Shrinking season 3's most heartwarming full-circle moments. Sean was among the first patients Jimmy used his "Jimmying" technique on, and that included allowing the troubled vet to move into the pool house. It was, in truth, an unprofessional disaster, but it led to a lovely friendship that proved immensely valuable to both characters. Sean doesn't need Jimmy in the same way anymore, and their goodbye in the Shrinking season 3 finale is the perfect capper and one of the show's most important arcs.
Paul Finally Embraces His Fathership Role In Jimmy's Life
The Shrinking season 3 finale starts with Jimmy and Paul still at odds, though they more or less make up within the episode's first few minutes. Their conversation doesn't fully put the issue to rest, however. Jimmy admits that he was taking his anger at his dad out on Paul, but Paul's response to this isn't quite right. He acts as if Jimmy's projection is no different than when his other patients similarly used him as a stand-in for their fathers. There's absolutely no acknowledgment that, in this case, Paul truly is a father figure for Jimmy.
Paul clings tightly to his reluctance to acknowledge that Jimmy really is like a son to him, and that he has, at times, been emotionally unavailable and even a bit cruel. He creates even more distance with Jimmy than usual, claiming that Jimmy needs to learn to handle his own problems rather than depend so much on Paul. It takes Julie, Meg, and Alice expressing their disgust over Paul's behavior for him to finally realize he is being an ass. He jumps on a plane back to California and surprises Jimmy with the final emotional pep talk of Shrinking season 3.
Shrinking Season 3's Final Scene & Sofi's Return Explained
Shrinking season 3 ends with what is easily one of the most beautiful moments of the entire series. Paul's surprise invitation for breakfast turns out to be an ambush, since it's actually Sofi that Jimmy will be eating with (he Jimmied him). First things first, however, Paul and Jimmy have the talk they've both needed for years.

Paul tells Jimmy that moving forward doesn't mean forgetting the past, but rather not allowing those past scars to hold him back. He reminds him that scars are a sign of a life lived—it's good he is covered in them, so he must embrace them. Even more meaningful than this, however, is Paul's confession that he loves Jimmy like a son. He tells him that he is strong and doesn't really need him. Regardless, whenever Jimmy feels like he needs Paul, he'll be there.
All of this is exactly what Jimmy needed to hear from Paul. The older man didn't give up on his tough love by any means, and that solid push to reconnect with Sofi was absolutely necessary. However, the rare softness of Paul's advice was even more valuable. It was important that Jimmy know that he means as much to Paul as Paul means to him. He needed to know that this mentor and father figure didn't see him as weak and emotional, as he had so often implied. Paul's unique brand of encouragement allowed Jimmy to take that step, sit down with Sofi, and, finally, move forward.
What's Next For Jimmy & Paul In Shrinking Season 4
This Shrinking episode did more than wrap up a season. Jimmy's move forward concludes the first big arc of his story, which started back in season 1. This makes the upcoming season 4 the start of something brand new. It's difficult to say precisely how this will go. Jimmy and Paul's relationship has gone through a new evolution, but they now live on opposite sides of the country. They won't have those frequent chats in the office break room or on park benches. It will certainly be an adjustment for and audience alike.
Of course, coping should be a bit easier for Jimmy now that he is back on track with Sofi. We can certainly assume that their breakfast together went well, and Shrinking season 4 should carry these two into what will hopefully be a more solid relationship now that Jimmy isn't held back by his scars. Before we know it, Derek, Liz, Gaby, Derek #2, Brian, and Charlie will all be back in town, and things will settle into a new normal. Still, only time will tell what disastrous, emotional, and absolutely hilarious events will have in store.
