is finally going to the big screen.

Warner Bros. has officially confirmed a Game of Thrones movie is in development. It was previously reported that a was in the works at Warner Bros., the studio set to adapt it based on Aegon's Conquest. However, there had been no official word about the movie nor its development from Warner Bros. themselves.

According to , Warner Bros. formally announced the movie, titled Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, at CinemaCon. The movie, which was shown as part of the studio's "2027 and beyond" announcements, will be written by Beau Willimon, best known for being the showrunner of House of Cards and a writer on the Star Wars TV show Andor.

The movie is expected to pull from the pages of George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, a book detailing hundreds of years of Targaryen history, and the same source material for House of the Dragon. The movie will follow the exploits of the first Aegon Targaryen, the first King of Westeros and the creator of the Iron Throne.

Aegon united the Seven Kingdoms under the Targaryen banner, with the weapons of the Iron Throne having been melted from the weapons of his enemies. In addition to ruling the kingdom alongside his sisters - who were also his wives - Queen Visenya and and Queen Rhaenys, he also rode atop Balerion, the Black Dread, the biggest dragon in Westeros history.

Initially, , which would have seen the story join the ranks of ongoing spinoffs on HBO. Instead, it appears the movie is going to be the main event, adapting the story of Aegon's rise to power for the big screen. It helps differentiate the film from the rest of the franchise, opening the door for new types of stories in Westeros.

As of writing, there are two ongoing spinoffs set in the world of Westeros set to come back over the next year. premieres in June 2026, continuing the Dance of the Dragons, while is due out in early 2027, following Dunk and Egg's grand adventures across Westeros over one hundred years later.

As the origin point for Westeros' hundreds of years of history ruled by Targaryens, Aegon is, arguably, the character who kick-started all the events that have unfolded across the franchise's history. His conquest is an important part of the larger , thus making it a worthwhile endeavor to adapt on the big screen.

Although the exact plot details remain under wraps, the movie's announcement means its development is a priority for Warner Bros. Showcasing this event in the Game of Thrones franchise on the big screen will prove just how much staying power it has, and just how big the franchise can be when performing in movie theaters.

With the Game of Thrones movie in capable hands, it's poised to be a massive step for the franchise. Aegon's Conquest seems like the perfect story for the series to make this leap, marking a new chapter that will be filled with high-octane action, political scheming, and compelling characters under the Targaryen banner.
