The series is at an absolutely crucial point in its life cycle right now, after several disappointing releases left it needing a huge win to regain the confidence of the gathered masses. The arrival of later this year should hopefully go some way to restoring the faith of the public, but it's the next mainline game in the series that could really make or break it moving forward.

What exactly that game is going to look like remains unclear, but more information is emerging all the time about what it isn't going to be, after leaked scrapped plans seemingly confirmed a huge change of development direction somewhere along the way.

Over on Twitter/X, , a well-known and reliable source for inside information, confirmed that the developer had been working on a mode tied to the release of Halo Infinite. That was scrapped, with the team pivoting to an extraction shooter that may well arrive with the next full game in the series.

A third was more tempered, , "A lot of commenters are reading the headline and not the full post. The extraction mode was last confirmed to be in development in 2026, and is now either a solo project or part of Halo 7. It's not like they're gonna release a standalone Halo extraction shooter. The fact remains that the developer really has to nail the single-player mode and story to really restore Halo to the heights it once occupied comfortably. Add to that a dose of the classic multiplayer experience with the same modes (and voiceover) that players are used to, and it's difficult to see how they wouldn't be on to a winner. Fingers crossed they can make it all happen, or we might be in danger of losing one of gaming's most iconic franchises.
