The next focus for the series is the coming later this year, but that doesn't seem to be the only thing on the horizon for Master Chief and company. Thanks to the latest leak, we're starting to get a better picture of what the long-awaited Halo 7 itself could look like.
This new project, codenamed "Halo Next," would be Halo Studios' major follow-up to 2026's Halo Infinite. In the intervening time, Halo Studios has seen some major lay-offs and restructuring, along with the end of active development and content updates for Halo Infinite's free online component.
Halo reporter shared alleged details about Halo Next in a YouTube video this week, following a previous video where he addressed the status of a Halo Infinite sequel's development prior to the 2026 lay-offs. In the new update, Rebs Gaming claims that the original director for the project, Joe Staten, planned to "expand the universe with new elements" rather than bringing back the Flood. Instead, the focus would be on the Endless, an advanced species that made its first appearance in Halo Infinite.
The biggest bombshell of Rebs Gaming's report might lie in the claim that the game was apparently called "Campaign Next" internally. While that's relatively insignificant on its own, it appears to align with a new job listing for a Narrative Design Director on a project called "Halo Next." This would suggest that Halo is currently working on a new mainline game, which might build on the original plans for Campaign Next.
ahead, as the direction of the series in recent years has proven to be consistently divisive. While Halo Infinite's gameplay largely received praise, the narrative failed to impress most fans. Forging ahead with a story focusing on the Endless could provide an opportunity to flesh out new ideas in a more satisfying way, but some of the community would likely prefer to return to a story involving the Flood.

The reception of the Halo: Campaign Evolved remake could also set an important benchmark for the franchise's future. Halo Studios is moving from the proprietary Slispace Engine to Unreal Engine 5 and (in some capacity) in the game's development, shifts that will presumably continue in Halo 7. It's also coming to PlayStation 5, bringing Xbox's flagship to competing consoles for the first time in series history.
