Whenever you go and look at the trending charts for any streaming service, there are going to be obvious movies and a handful of surprises. Typically, the latest releases find themselves near the top of the charts, as do some of the most popular films of all time. Yet, there always seems to be something on there from a decade or two ago that randomly finds its way to become a surprise trending hit.

Right now, that's the case with Paramount+, which has 2004's in its top 10. In fact, the movie has been charting for the past two weeks, including hitting as high as #2. It's kind of an outlier among the rest of the movies on the charts, which include the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, family films like The Spongebob SquarePants Movie, and newer releases like Primate. It doesn't make much sense that a stoner comedy from over two decades ago is up there.

Movies from the past, especially in the comedy genre, tend to find new life on streaming if a sequel is arriving, which was . Nobody could've predicted it for Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, yet it sets up an interesting possibility for the franchise's future.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle Is A Comedy Classic

As noted, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is widely viewed as one of the better comedy movies from the 2000s. What makes it work so well is that it centers on such a simple premise, yet goes over the top in ensuring there are laughs that come from the situation. It follows Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) as two friends who get high one evening and decide they want White Castle. What should be an everyday trip to get food turns into a ridiculous adventure.

They find that the White Castle closest to them has shut down, they get chased by campus security at Princeton, they meet some unusual characters, including an absurd version of Neil Patrick Harris, and a hang glider even gets used. Despite its wacky nature, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle was well-received by critics and currently holds a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

At the time of its release, Penn and Cho weren't all that well-known and given the setup, this wasn't a commercial hit that everyone rushed to see. It only grossed just over $20 million, yet it found new life after its theatrical run. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle became a cult hit that managed to spawn two sequels over the next decade or so.

The Sequels Are Disappointing But Still Fun

The ending of Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle set up a sequel where the two main characters would travel to Amsterdam so Harold could woo the girl of his dreams, Maria. That led to Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, which sees the two get arrested due to racial profiling. The events that follow are even more over-the-top than what happened in the original and while the box office was better, the reviews from critics were worse.

A few years later, the duo returned to complete a trilogy with . Taking advantage of the hype surrounding 3D releases at the time was a choice, though it didn't completely pan out as this grossed a lower total than the second installment. That said, reviews were better this time around. Ultimately, that means the sequels to Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle are something of a mixed bag.

What Harold & Kumar Trending In 2026 Could Mean

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle being a streaming hit in 2026 was certainly unexpected, but it does shine a light on why that film worked so well in the first place. It was a cult hit that gained popularity as time went on, and more people started talking about it. Word of mouth was crucial for this stoner comedy and that has continued even two decades later. It shows that the staying power of the film is remarkable.

While Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is succeeding on a streaming service right now, the sequels aren't currently available on one. They're available to rent but that's it. If they were on a streaming service, though, it feels like they wouldn't rank near the top of any chart. The sequels are fun, yet they don't have the kind of long-term appeal that the original does. People still quote Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle to this day, which plays into its standing on Paramount+.

The Future Of The Harold & Kumar Franchise

Considering the third installment in this franchise arrived in 2011, which is now nearly 15 years ago, the idea of a fourth entry seems absurd. That's especially true when you consider the combined box office intake of the trilogy was only just over $100 million. However, there have been talks about following up the films with several endeavors over the years.

In 2014, Kal Penn and one of the writers announced that Adult Swim picked up Harold and Kumar: The Animated Series, though it never got produced. John Cho also said that he pitched an idea for a fourth film in 2016 but nothing came of it. Screenwriters and directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, as well as Penn, also said that a fourth movie was going to happen but they had to line up everyone's schedules.

Finally, in June 2026, . Penn and Cho are expected to reprise their roles and Hurwitz said that he started working on the script in early 2026. The fact that Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle has become a hit on Paramount+ bodes well for the success of the future sequel, which could make it the biggest movie in the franchise to date.
