I Am Legend 2 has found its director.
Per , Steven Caple Jr. is directing I Am Legend 2. In a junket for Netflix's Man on Fire remake, Collider's Steve Weintraub spoke to Caple Jr., who confirmed the news that he is officially developing the follow-up to the 2007 film for Warner Bros.
The film, loosely based on the 1954 novel penned by Richard Matheson, tells , a virologist and the apparent last human survivor in New York City after a man-made virus kills most of humanity, transforming the rest into flesh-eating mutants. Given that it's been nearly 20 years since the post-apocalyptic zombie thriller hit theaters, hope was largely lost on a sequel, till now, with Caple Jr. stepping in. The first rumblings of Caple Jr. signing on to the sequel came back in 2026, with , and Akiva Goldsman, who penned the original film, returning to write the script. Jordan's apparent casting comes as no surprise, with Caple Jr. previously directing him in Creed II. His other credits include Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Land, and Man on Fire.
Smith is also reportedly attached to the project, but his role remains unclear, with the 2007 film seeing Neville sacrifice himself so fellow survivors Anna [Alice Braga] and Ethan [Charlie Tahan] could escape with a cure for the virus. While no other major story lines or plot points have been announced, Smith previously spoke about the highly anticipated sequel and Jordan's role in the film during an , revealing that Jordan won't be taking on the role of his son, but rather "the head" of a new survivor settlement in Connecticut.
What we were gonna do was the prequel, so we were gonna do the prequel. … And [Akiva Goldsman] was like, but wait, what if we make a new version from the alternate ending, where your character is still alive, and you know, Michael B. Jordan's character currently is the head of a new settlement... He's not my son... So there's a settlement in Connecticut.
