The hit Prime Video series is coming to an end in less than three weeks, and star Chace Crawford is teasing a "surprising" series finale next month.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Crawford admitted that it was "tough" to film the final episode of The Boys because there was "a lot of work" that went into crafting a fitting sendoff for these characters that fans have been watching on their screens for the past seven years, but it was also "a lot of fun."
He and the rest of the cast and crew get to end the series on their own terms, which not every TV show gets to do, but according to Crawford, showrunner Eric Kripke wrote, "the perfect final act to the show."
While the actor wasn't able to provide any plot details, he did claim that fans won't be disappointed. "I think it's going to be good," he teased. "There'll be some surprising stuff in there, and I'm excited."
While he isn't aware of everything that was shot for the finale, outside of what he filmed, Crawford said that he "can't wait" to watch the series finale when it's released on Prime Video on May 20.
Reflecting on his time starring on The Boys, Crawford boldly declared that he'll never experience "as much fun and weirdness" as he did .
"God, it was tough to shoot. But it was also a lot of fun. I can't wait to see the finale. I don't know really what was shot or how it was done, outside of a little bit of what I did, but it was a lot of work. I think to go out on your own terms is something that's not afforded to every TV show, so to know it was ending and that Kripke was writing the perfect final act to the show was special. We knew it was rarefied air, and it's one of the greatest shows of all time. I'll never have as much fun and weirdness as I did playing the Deep and getting to play his character. As for the finale? I don't think people will be disappointed. I think it's going to be good. There'll be some surprising stuff in there, and I'm excited."
Before The Boys, Crawford was best known for playing Nate Archibald on Gossip Girl. He also appeared on Blood & Oil, What to Expect When You're Expecting, Eloise, Nighthawks and Inheritance.
Crawford's co-stars on the dark and gritty superhero series include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Jensen Ackles, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry and Daveed Diggs.
The Boys debuted in 2019 on Prime Video and was an instant hit with subscribers of the streaming service as well as with critics, who gave the first season an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The following two seasons continued to be critically acclaimed and received nearly perfect RT scores of 97% and 98%, respectively.
, which is currently releasing new episodes every Wednesday, is already Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% critic score. However, reactions from fans haven't been nearly that high. While most audience reviews are positive, their Rotten Tomatoes score is 21% lower than the critic score.
In fact, 's audience rating is one of the lowest scores of the entire series, with seasons 3 and 4 receiving lower scores of 72% and 54%, respectively.
While some fans are praising the season for faithfully adapting the comics, others have claimed the writers are just lecturing viewers now about the current state of politics in the United States.
Several have come eerily close to mirroring real-life events, even though the scripts were written well before the current U.S. administration took office.
