Netflix continues producing original movies to great success, and one of its biggest hits is a fantasy masterpiece that ended up reinventing an entire genre. Despite strong competition from other streaming platforms, Netflix is still one of the biggest and most popular streamers, which now mostly stands out for its original content. Thanks to that, Netflix now has some titles among , both live-action and animated.
Movies like The Mitchells vs. the Machines, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, Klaus, and The Willoughbys are some of to date, and joining them now is . Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix in June 2026 and was an instant success, becoming the platform’s most-watched original title in its history.

A trio of women became demon hunters and used their music to create a magical barrier against the demons, called the Honmoon. Every couple of years, a new trio of hunters takes over, with the current one being the K-pop group Huntrix, formed by Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo).
The girls live a double life as pop stars and demon hunters, and both get more complicated with the emergence of a rival boy band called Saja Boys, whose members are actually demons. KPop Demon Hunters has a perfect balance of comedy, music, action, drama, and incredible visuals, full of color, small details everywhere, and visual comedy. Of course, a big part of the appeal of , with “Golden” becoming a worldwide sensation and winning several awards, including an Oscar.
The genre of animated musical movies is a tough one, as it’s one that has been molded and dominated by Disney for decades. Disney crafts its original songs to be viral anthems, and it has mostly succeeded at it for many years. However, KPop Demon Hunters arrived to break that mold, with genuinely pop and catchy songs that play on the radio and can be found on music streaming apps, and that weren’t exactly made to go viral – if they achieved that, it was a result of their quality and the movie’s popularity.
Of course, KPop Demon Hunters also redefined the genre by straying from the typical formula of a main character who comes from royalty and has an animal sidekick, instead focusing on the friendship between the members of Huntrix, their mission as demon hunters, the mythology around that, and their individual struggles. KPop Demon Hunters has been a breath of fresh air in the world of animation, and it rightfully earned its enduring success.
KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Has A Huge Challenge Ahead
The quality and success of KPop Demon Hunters are undeniable, and with a world with such an interesting and rich mythology and charming characters, it’s not surprising that it’s expanding. A sequel to in March 2026, with Kang and Appelhans confirmed to return as writers and directors.
While a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is definitely an exciting project, this world set a huge challenge for itself. KPop Demon Hunters set the bar very high not just for other musical animated movies, but also for its own sequel. The biggest challenge the KPop Demon Hunters sequel is facing is being as fresh, fun, and creative as the first movie, while also expanding on its world and its characters’ stories, and bringing more catchy pop songs.

Kang has shared that they plan the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters to be larger in scale and more eventful than the first movie, with Ejae (who provided the singing voice for Rumi) expressing interest in exploring other musical genres in the sequel, more specifically, trot and heavy metal (via ). It’s fair to say, then, that the team behind KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel knows exactly the challenges they are facing and how to overcome them.
The sequel to KPop Demon Hunters doesn’t have a projected release date, though it has been said to probably come as soon as 2029, but it might take longer. Until then, KPop Demon Hunters will surely continue to be Netflix’s biggest animated movie and one that will be very hard to beat.
