An iconic hero officially has a startling new ability, as Marvel permanently evolves their already incredible powers. This new power comes with some startling applications, while also transforming their connection to one of the biggest stories in Marvel history.

X-Men's Bishop Can Now Channel Chronal Energy

In the recent Civil War: Unmasked #1 - from Christos Gage, Edgar Salazar, Morry Hollowell and Travis Lanham - X-Men reveals a major new application for Bishop's powers. The issue is a flashback to the events of 2006's Civil War, and sees to his disastrous future timeline.

Upon arrival, they're detected by ultra-powerful Sentinel Nimrod. Nimrod intends to steal the device they used in order to travel back and destroy mutantkind at their most vulnerable. Thankfully, Bishop is able to alter the time gate to send Nimrod back to 4,500,000,000 BC, where the robot is destroyed.

However, Bishop's trick isn't technological - it's a result of his mutant power. , intensifying, converting or altering them within his body before unleashing them at his discretion. This issue reveals Bishop can also influence "chronal energy," allowing him to drastically manipulate time travel.

This comic establishes that Bishop is able to manipulate time travel using his mutant powers - an ability which in this case allows him to take out the ultimate Sentinel all but single-handed.

How Could Marvel Use This New Power?

Bishop being able to control "chronal energy" makes him the ultimate weapon against Marvel's time travelers. The ability to alter a time traveler's destination by literally billions of years while going undetected makes - especially because this ability isn't widely known.

Hopefully, Marvel uses this power to pit Bishop against time-traveling characters like Kang the Conqueror or Immortus - foes who usually pose a major threat to Earth whenever they appear.

There are also some intriguing implications of this ability. Bishop can generally change the nature of the energy he absorbs. If control of chronal energy is among his powers, he should logically be able to transform other types of energy into chronal energy, making him capable of generating time travel portals without any kind of technology.

Bishop Is Secretly to Blame for Marvel's Civil War

As well as giving Bishop a new power, this issue also transforms his place in Civil War. By taking Tony Stark into the future, Bishop shows him the disastrous consequences of Project Wideawake - an anti-superhuman contingency plan intended to go live if the Superhuman Registration Act fails.

Tony explicitly says that while he previously saw the Act as inevitable, it's Bishop who makes him a believer, making it so that he will do anything to make sure the Act passes.

Following this 100% canon comic, Bishop is now largely responsible for the events of Civil War, turning Tony from a reluctant supporter of the Superhuman Registration Act to someone willing to lock his friends in an extradimensional gulag, unleash deadly villains on his old allies, and even give his life to ensure Bishop's future doesn't come to pass.

Bishop's Villain Era Just Got Even More Extreme

In 2008, Bishop underwent a significant villain era after coming to believe that the young mutant Hope Summers would bring about his dystopian future. Bishop hunted Hope across time, killing billions in his attempt to erase her from history.

It was an incredibly dark turn for the character that's been hard to shake off, but this latest retcon makes it even worse. Bishop isn't just responsible for cross-time genocide, he's also behind a massive hero vs hero war that killed off superheroes like Goliath and led to Norman Osborn's rise to power.

With a new solo series beginning June 10, Bishop has never had so much to answer for in Marvel lore. Hopefully, his new ability to manipulate chronal energy can help him score some major heroic victories, because as things currently stand, he's severely in the red.

Civil War: Unmasked #1 is available now from Marvel Comics, with Bishop #1 coming June 10.
