Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2
Thanks to a reveal in , a way now exists to retcon a key detail from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Monitor screens in Godzilla: King of the Monsters went a long way toward building upon the Titan lore of the Monsterverse, but also set some major limitations, especially for stories set before the film.
In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it's explicitly stated that, in addition to Godzilla, Monarch had discovered 17 Titans, all of which were creatures that Monarch were keeping an eye on via the outposts they had set up all over the planet. The movie even shared these locations and the organization's official designations for each Titan.
Obviously, King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra account for three of the 17 monsters. Another three are the original monsters that showed up in Godzilla: King of the Monsters: Scylla, Methuselah, and Behemoth. The fourth MUTO, though, is not one of the 17, as she hadn't been found prior to the start of the film.
As for the remaining 11, some have been shown off. , and Amhuluk, Abaddon, and Mokele-Mbembe have been represented in other official Monsterverse material. The rest have all been named but have gone unseen thus far.
What all this means is that there are some noteworthy restrictions on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, since it takes place before the film. But, the actions of Isabel Simmons may change that.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Reveals How The Past Can Be Changed
In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 7, nearly had a potentially game-changing impact on the timeline when he interacted with his younger self in Axis Mundi from the surface. He resisted the temptation to alter certain events in his life, and even convinced his younger self not to rescue Keiko earlier than how it was supposed to happen.
But while Lee Shaw managed to avoid any consequential timeline changes, one could still occur regardless, as Isabel Simmons has already confided in Kentaro that she wants to prevent G-Day from ever happening. And now, she has Titan X's egg, which may somehow factor into that plan if she's able to send it into Axis Mundi.
The Monsterverse Can Now Introduce New Titans And Change Key Details From King Of The Monsters
Manipulating events in Axis Mundi could result in key moments in the Monsterverse timeline, not unlike how Cate unwittingly summoned Titan X. It's possible that Isabel Summons' plan incidentally stirs yet another Monsterverse Titan, which wouldn't necessarily have to be one of the .
The Monsterverse has introduced additional Titans that Monarch knew about before 2019, such as the Frost Vark, the Endopede, and the Ion Dragon. But the Frost Vark and the Endopede are both dead, so it makes sense that neither was mentioned in King of the Monsters. And the Ion Dragon - who was severely wounded by Godzilla - may be dead as well.
Even if Isabel changes the past, even if it's not in the way she intends, future seasons of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters can directly contradict King of the Monsters by introducing new Titans and leaving them alive.
Another established detail that creates restrictions on Monsterverse stories is the lack of public Godzilla sightings between 2014 and 2019. Any changes to the timestream could upend that too, paving the way for more creative freedom when it comes to the Titan activity that might occur in a potential third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
