Over at , they're making an unexpected change to the listing of a major first-party RPG. Access will be lost to an older version, a move which typically draws a fair bit of criticism, but there's quite a lucrative consolation this time around, albeit with a couple of caveats.

On May 27, the original version of The Outer Worlds will be delisted, making the Spacer's Choice Edition remaster the only one available for purchase. For those who already own The Outer Worlds on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, they will be automatically upgraded to Spacer's Choice Edition for free, according to the announcement on . This crucially means that existing owners will gain access to the Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos expansions at no additional cost.

The Outer Worlds' relisting sadly leaves PS4 and Xbox One users behind, though the game and its DLCs will be receiving permanent price reductions on those platforms. The base game will be reduced to $24.99, while and will each get a new price of $14.99 on those older consoles (there's no word on the Nintendo Switch version). The Spacer's Choice Edition is also permanently going down in price to $39.99.

The base game, however, can likely be purchased for cheaper (it's $30 on Steam right now, for instance), so anyone hoping to get in on the DLC "giveaway" can save a bit before the relisting goes live. For those who already own The Outer Worlds on PC, PS5, or Series X/S, the game will still be playable. It will not be removed from your library, and you'll receive the Spacer's Choice Edition for free. It should be noted, however, that saves do not transfer to the Spacer's Choice Edition on consoles (there is a workaround on PC), so you'll have to start a new playthrough on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.

Considering some players will receive both expansion packs for free – roughly a $30 deal – Xbox is offering a pretty generous consolation for the original version being delisted. The Spacer's Choice Edition was poorly received initially for making some odd changes to The Outer Worlds' art style and some unfortunate bugs, but has more recently had its wrinkles ironed out. The Outer Worlds itself was fairly divisive initially, but its expansions are generally considered highlights of the game.

Developer Obsidian Entertainment followed up on the 2019 original with The Outer Worlds 2 last year, but its financial underperformance . Both titles aren't necessarily the most groundbreaking RPGs, but there's a lot to like, and they do a wonderful job showing off Obsidian's strength in creating games of a constrained, tightly designed scope. Existing base game players getting both expansions for free is a nice little bonus from Xbox, and may get more people to try out arguably the best parts of the original The Outer Worlds.
