A brand-new spinoff has been announced and will be released before the TV show returns to Disney+.
Author , who wrote the fantasy novels, just announced on his website that he is publishing a new book series set in the world of Percy Jackson. The first novel, Camp Half-Blood: The Wild Zone, which he co-wrote with Annebelle Oh, will be released on September 29.
There are expected to be four novels in the Camp Half-Blood series. The author is teaming up with a different author for each one, with Kyle Lukoff, Jada Adia, and Pablo Cartaya on board as co-writers of the final three books, which will be released six months apart from each other.
These brand-new stories take place between the events of The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, the first two installments of the , and center on four demigods who arrive at Camp Half-Blood amid shocking secrets that surface after campers start disappearing.
Despite being set in the world of Percy Jackson, the titular character will not appear in any of the four stories. The main character in The Wild Zone is Katie Kim, Ares' Korean-American daughter, who has a "very dangerous secret, and who discovers a forbidden area in the forest at camp called, well, The Wild Zone."
The first sequel, co-written with Lukoff, centers on Aphrodite's son, Harper Rush. Riordan teamed up with Jade Adia for a story about Apollo's daughter, Zuri Chapman, in the third novel, while the final installment was written with Pablo Cartaya and tells the story of an unclaimed demigod named Benny Garcia.
"Annabelle Oh co-wrote the first book with me. She’s a super-talented author of middle grade and young adult books who lives in Southern California. The Wild Zone is told from the POV of Katie Kim, a Korean-American daughter of Ares who has a very dangerous secret, and who discovers a forbidden area in the forest at camp called, well, The Wild Zone."
Riordan decided to work with other writers on this project because the four campers have "very different backgrounds," and he wanted their stories to be told authentically. "Each writer narrated their part of the story from one character's point of view...told over the course of four books," he explained, before revealing that he and the other authors "split the money equally. Equal billing, equal credit."
"These four campers all came from very different backgrounds. So I thought it would be cool if I found four authors who shared those backgrounds and could write the demigods’ stories in a way that felt more real and true. Each writer narrated their part of the story from one character’s point of view. The series is a stand-alone adventure set during the autumn at Camp Half-Blood, told over the course of four books. And my co-authors were hardly ghosts in this process. The best part, for me, is getting to put the spotlight on four extraordinary novelists. We shared the work equally. We split the money equally. Equal billing, equal credit."
As part of this announcement, Riordan also revealed that Disney has already optioned the TV rights to the Camp Half-Blood series, but made it clear that it doesn't mean an adaptation will actually get made. After all, "a lot of books that get optioned are never made into shows or movies."
"Camp Half-Blood is under option with Disney+ right now for a potential TV show...That doesn’t necessarily mean it will get made. A lot of books that get optioned are never made into shows or films."
After writing the Percy Jackson books, , The Trials of Apollo, The Nico di Angelo Adventures duology, and The Senior Year Adventures trilogy.
Two Senior Year novels (The Chalice of the Gods and Wrath of the Triple Goddess) have been released so far, with Riordan revealing that he still plans to publish the final installment, despite his work on Camp Half-Blood. As soon as work on Camp Half-Blood is wrapped, I'll go back to writing the third senior year adventure," he promised. "I've got the first draft done, so hopefully the wait won't be too much longer."
"I’m still writing book three, which is the last one! When I got the idea for the Camp Half-Blood series, it kind of jumped in front of that novel. And it has taken a while, because it’s complicated coordinating a story with four other authors. But as soon as work on Camp Half-Blood is wrapped, I’ll go back to writing the third senior year adventure about [Percy]. I’ve got the first draft done, so hopefully the wait won’t be too much longer.
"As far as I’m planning right now, that book will be the last Percy Jackson-narrated adventure. I think it’s the right place to let [Percy] sail off into the sunset and enjoy [his] life."
in 2010 and 2013, but they were widely panned by critics and audiences alike. Since then, Riordan has expressed his unhappiness with how the filmmakers brought his fictional world to life on the big screen.
A decade later, Disney debuted a faithful adaptation of the series, which hired Riordan as an executive producer and currently holds a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. (By contrast, the films never surpassed 50%.) Two seasons have been released so far, with expected to premiere in late 2026.
Until the TV show returns to Disney+, fans can dive back into the world of Percy Jackson with the first book in Riordan's new Camp Half-Blood series.
Camp Half-Blood: The Wild Zone will be released on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
