While 2026 was already projected to have the , it already looks like the prediction wasn't too far off with the massively successful movies we've seen so far. From the Chinese Pegasus 3 dominating the global box office to even video game adaptations like taking off, the year is already off to an excellent start, but 2026 is only getting better thanks to one upcoming spin-off.
Although most video game adaptations fail for the simple reason of not understanding how to best utilize their source material, the developers behind adapting one of 2026's highest-grossing films are even bringing in the original creator to make it more accurate to the setting. As noted by on X, the upcoming gaming adaptation is designed solely for a virtual or augmented reality experience, which will offer a brand-new perspective of the critically acclaimed film.
Project Hail Mary Is Getting An Official Gaming Spinoff
Experiencing The Series Like You've Never Seen It Before
Despite having only been released in theaters to massive box office success, the beloved will officially be getting its own video game adaptation in the form of a mixed reality adventure titled Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars. Rather than simply adapting a portion of the story, the gaming experience even follows a brand-new story made in collaboration with the author Andy Weir himself.
Although there's no specific release date just yet, we do know that Journey Among the Stars will be arriving sometime in late 2026 and is being developed by the team that previously worked on virtual reality projects for Doctor Who, Peaky Blinders, and Thief.
As if getting more time alone with Rocky didn't sound exciting enough on its own, the upcoming game will allow you to "Step into the role of Ryland Grace during a pivotal untold chapter of the mission," according to the official site, while also being tagged as a cooperative game where you and Rocky work together to save the ship and both your species as a result.
The Perfect Fit For A Creative Movie Like Project Hail Mary

Given that much of the Project Hail Mary film takes place in or around Grace's spaceship, the detailed yet cramped environments are already an excellent fit for the unique augmented reality experience that Journey Among the Stars aims to offer, rather than a traditionally enclosed VR space you would normally expect.
While there has been plenty of excitement over being able to see a "first-person virtual version of the cockpit" and even "communicate and interact with Rocky" through gestures and other motions, some fans have with the project already.

Aside from not being a fully virtual reality experience, the current platforms only list Pico and Meta Quest compatibility at the moment, which has raised concerns that it might be yet another great project locked behind platform exclusivity. Thankfully, however, the website does list that additional systems are "to be confirmed", meaning there's still a chance to get the project on PC or PSVR sometime in the future.
Regardless of when or where Project Hail Mary's Journey Among the Stars gaming spinoff ends up releasing, it's bound to be an extra treat for any fans of the series that want a little more out of the already fantastic film, which already has several .
