Ryan Gosling has one of the most fascinating careers of any leading man in Hollywood. Although he's certainly not along as a top actor with an incredible ability to be versatile at every turn, there's something extra fun about . As time has gone on, he's become one of the funniest actors working today, which we don't often see from someone who is also known for leading epic sci-fi projects and even some of the most heartstopping legal dramas in recent memory.
The comedic timing that Ryan Gosling has displayed over the years is among the best you'll find anywhere. It has led to him getting more roles that lean into comedy than you might expect. He's appeared in a film about a financial crisis that had surprisingly funny bits while also being the lead in a sci-fi epic that has captivated the world around where he delivers one of his funniest performances. We've come to expect Ryan Gosling to make us laugh at least a little bit in each role.
In fact, Gosling is the rare actor who seems to often get his most praise in comedic roles. He's been nominated for major accolades for his comedic turns, even though the genre has been overlooked by awards ceremonies in the past, proving Gosling's penchant for being hilarious.
7 The Big Short (2015)
As noted, Ryan Gosling has a role in an unexpected comedy. The Big Short covers how the 2008 financial crisis was triggered by the U.S. housing bubble and the people who were part of it. That sets the stage for what should be a film with heavy dramatic emphasis and even some tragic aspects. However, with Adam McKay directing and co-writing the screenplay, there are some serious laughs to be had. Steve Carell and Brad Pitt are good for that, as are the cameos by the likes of Margot Robbie, and Gosling is part of that.
Gosling plays Jared Vennett, a Deutsche Bank salesman who sells Michael Burry's (Christian Bale) credit default swaps for his own profit. This is a different kind of comedic performance for Gosling. He's a charismatic guy who makes sure his characters are easy to love but in The Big Short, he delivers his laughs with a dry humor. While he's obviously not laugh-out-loud funny, it's good to watch The Big Short to grasp his comedic versatility.
6 Lars And The Real Girl (2007)
The entire premise of Lars and the Real Girl can really only work on the big screen if the leading man is full of charisma. Thankfully, the filmmakers cast Ryan Gosling as Lars Lindstrom and he showcases, still early in his career, that he had the goods to lead a project like this. Lars and Real Girl centers on the titular Lars and the romantic relationship he forms with an anatomically correct sex doll named Bianca.
The main crux of the film deals with Lars being misunderstood and Gosling makes sure to nail all the emotional scenes. However, he also is charming and funny throughout. It's incredibly endearing to see this unorthodox relationship forge and you can't help but laugh at some of what he does. It's not a goofy role but it's still solidly funny.
5 The Fall Guy (2026)
By the time 2026 rolled around, the world fully understood just how funny Ryan Gosling can be. He had delivered in spades in several comedic roles and The Fall Guy looked to capitalize on that while including action bits. Loosely based on the '80s TV show of the same name, The Fall Guy is directed by David Leitch, who has expertly blended comedy with action in the likes of Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train.
He did so again with The Fall Guy, which made him an ideal partner for , an action stuntman. Gosling understands how to deliver lines and reactions with expert comedic timing while also making sure the action is great and showcasing romantic chemistry with Emily Blunt. His performance is a big reason why reviews were strong for the film.
4 Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Crazy, Stupid, Love has so many fantastic comedic actors. Steve Carell, Emma Stone, and Marisa Tomei, are all great, yet it's Ryan Gosling who stands out from the pack. The movie follows several intertwining romantic stories, including one where Gosling's Jacob helps Carell's Cal learn how to pick up women at bars. The banter between Gosling and Carell is outstanding.
Gosling nails the charming womanizer role, while playing so well off of Carell. The scene of them shopping together, where Gosling gets to slap Carell and react to their different ways of life is comedy gold, as is the way he delivers the lines of the ridiculous things he says to the women he meets. When all the storylines converge in a ridiculous scene, Gosling gets some of the highlights, including punching Cal's rival.
3 Project Hail Mary (2026)
On paper, Project Hail Mary sounds like a film that doesn't have a place for comedy. Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a teacher who ends up in space on a mission where he's trying to save the planet from dying. However, the fun twist comes from the fact that he meets an alien while on the mission and the two form an unlikely bond.
Most of features Gosling acting alongside a puppet, yet his comedic capabilities allow him to carry the film. His charming back and forth with his new friend is one thing but where Gosling really shines is in the physical comedy. Watching him struggle with anti-gravity, let out a high-pitched scream, or find a way to navigate the new normal of his life make for one of his funniest performances to date.
2 Barbie (2026)
When most people think of Ryan Gosling making them laugh, their minds likely go to Barbie. The movie became a monster hit, grossing more than $1 billion, and landed Gosling major awards acclaim, including nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and more.

While the focus of Barbie is on the titular character and women in general, Gosling's Ken might be the most memorable aspect. He plays the character exactly the way you'd think a toy doll would. He doesn't know much other than the simple things his toys are for, like "beach." Gosling's laugh from the movie has become iconic, yet nothing tops "I'm Just a Ken," a brilliant song that he gets to sing and perform in the funniest way possible.
1 The Nice Guys (2016)
It's a shame that more people don't talk about The Nice Guys because it's not just Ryan Gosling's funniest role, it's also one of his best, period. The Shane Black movie centers on a private eye named Holland (Gosling) and an enforcer (Russell Crowe) as they work together to solve the case of a teen girl who went missing. Their mismatched personalities are what drive the movie to its greatness and has a decade later.
Gosling is downright hilarious as Holland because of his ineptitude. He's confident, yet keeps messing things up as the film takes the genre's tropes and turns them on their head. He and Crowe play well off each other and Gosling shines when working with Angourie Rice, who plays his daughter. From his double-take when offered a free drink to his high-pitched scream when his arm gets broken, this is peak Ryan Gosling comedy.
