The fate of has been revealed.
Debuting in February on ABC, with episodes also streaming on Hulu, begins with a massive change. JD (Zach Braff) is now Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart, stepping into the position with a bit of uncertainty after he is unexpectedly recommended for the position. But he's not alone. Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) are also back, now both seasoned vets looking after a group of young doctors.
has confirmed that the Scrubs revival will be back for another season. The news comes directly from the show's official X account, which shared the news along with the following caption: "Just what the doctor ordered: Scrubs will be back for another season 💙"
Additional reporting on the renewal notes that, although no specific episode count has been announced, season 2 of the revival will likely still produce a limited number of episodes. The first installment consisted of 9 episodes.
With this renewal, all of ABC's scripted shows have been renewed for additional seasons. The only exception, at this point, is the new Scott Speedman-led detective drama R.J. Decker, which is currently airing its first season and remains on the bubble.
The news about the renewal of Scrubs is not entirely surprising. The revival's premiere ranks as the highest-rated comedy telecast on any network this season among adults ages 18 to 49. Also, according to data from Nielsen, the premiere garnered an impressive 11 million total viewers across all platforms in its first 35 days.
Braff, Faison, and Chalke are back in main cast member roles. But other familiar faces also make appearances. Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley recur as Carla and Dr. Perry Cox. Phill Lewis and Robert Maschio, meanwhile, both guest star as Dr. Hooch and Dr. Todd Quinlan, respectively. Later episodes also bring back Jordan (Christa Miller) and JD's former nemesis, The Janitor, played by Neil Flynn.
Along with , they are joined by new faces, including Dr. Samantha “Sam” Tosh (Ava Bunn), Dr. Asher Green (Jacob Dudman), Dr. Blake Lewis (David Gridley), Dr. Amara Hadi (Layla Mohammadi), and Dr. Dashana Trainor (Amanda Morrow). By the finale, many of those young medical professionals begin to get caught up in their own romances.
Also in , JD begins a new romance with Charlie (The O.C. alum Rachel Bilson). It's his first serious relationship after divorcing Elliot, though the two are generally on good terms. Dr. Cox is also facing medical trouble, with McGinley mentioning that his character will appear more frequently in the upcoming season.
Original series creator Bill Lawrence returned to executive produce the revival via his Doozer Productions alongside Doozer’s Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, in addition to Braff, Faison, and Chalke. Aseem Batra serves as executive producer and showrunner. The revival of Scrubs has also been well-received, sitting at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes among critics and 93% among audiences.
