There's little debate that is one of the most popular fantasy RPG franchises of all time, and it's a little hard to believe it's already been almost 15 years since the last mainline entry, Skyrim, first launched. In that time, Skyrim has seen multiple special edition re-releases, an official VR version, countless fan-created mods and creation club content, several expansions, and more. The game's longevity is unmatched, with an incredibly active fanbase still to this day.

While fans of the franchise will never say die when it comes to Skyrim, there's a huge elephant in the room when it comes to one of the most highly anticipated games of the decade, rivaling (and arguably surpassing) the hype surrounding juggernaut upcoming games like GTA 6. The wait for Elder Scrolls 6 has been grueling, and with no official release date in sight, fans are starting to grow a bit restless.

That said, Bethesda just officially announced yet another major Skyrim release that will hopefully tide players over until we get some official news on The Elder Scrolls 6 front, and it's available to claim now (via ).

Bethesda has just announced that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 version is available to purchase now from the official Bethesda store and at most other major retailers for roughly $60 USD. Physical "code-in-box" editions of the Anniversary Switch 2 port have already hit shelves, and this edition includes the base game, the Dawnguard, Dragonborn, , and "hundreds of unique Creation Club items that add new quests, weapons, armor, spells, dungeons and more."

Gamers who already own will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 Anniversary Edition version for just $20 USD, while those who already have the Anniversary Edition for Switch 1 can upgrade entirely for free. Notably, gamers who own the physical edition on Nintendo Switch will have to upgrade to the Anniversary Edition using the in-game menu.

The Switch 2 Skyrim Anniversary Edition is officially enhanced for optimized performance on the console, with DLSS anti-aliasing, improved laod times, mouse and motion control support, and Amiibo support as well. Further, this version includes one-of-a-kind in-game content in the form of The Legend of Zelda-inspired gear, including a Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and the Champion’s Tunic.

This new Skyrim release is definitely going to be divisive among players, particularly because of the decision to make it a "code-in-box" physical edition release. Gamers are not happy with Nintendo's approach to "physical" releases that don't actually include a physical disc for the game, seeing it as a blatant cash grab that is clearly out of touch with demand for actual "traditional" physical releases.

Aside from that, Elder Scrolls fans are going to be a bit disgruntled to see yet another new announcement for the franchise that isn't The Elder Scrolls 6 related. Bethesda head honcho Todd Howard has trickled out hints over the years about what players can expect, getting gamers over-hyped for a game that may not release for several years to come.

Overall, while the Nintendo Switch 2 Anniversary Edition for Skyrim will certainly be of interest to many gamers, it isn't exactly the new release announcement most fans are waiting on.
