A new chapter means a lot of firsts for Peter Parker, in front of and behind the camera.
Destin Daniel Cretton is taking over the reins from Jon Watts for , the latest entry in Tom Holland's saga as Peter Parker and this time, he's on his own. After Doctor Strange's spell erased everyone's memory of Peter in 2026's No Way Home, the web-slinger is navigating adulthood all alone in New York City while watching his friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) grow up from afar.
Peter isn't entirely alone, though. He'll once again team up with an and his combative relationship with Jon Bernthal's Punisher will lead to a lot of street-level action. There's also Sadie Sink's mysterious new character, who many believe is Jean Grey, though that hasn't been confirmed.
Alongside those three, Spider-Man will be facing off against a slew of villains, including Michael Mando's Scorpion (who first appeared in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming), Marvin Jones III as Tombstone, as well as Boomerang, Tarantula, and The Hand, a shadowy organization that has ties to Daredevil, Iron First, and The Defenders series.
It sounds like a lot, but that didn't worry Cretton. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, the director told us what it was like to step into the world of Peter Parker, bringing , and how this Brand New Day is a lonely but exhilarating experience.
ScreeRant: What excited you most about stepping into the Spider-Man universe with Brand New Day?
Destin Daniel Cretton: Peter Parker has always been a character that I can see myself in. He’s imperfect, clumsy with his words, makes a lot of mistakes, and though he gets a lot of things wrong, he’s always trying to do the right thing. Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character was particularly relatable to me. He brings so much life and charm into his performances and has that magical ability to walk the line between comedy and drama effortlessly. I was super excited to work with him, and I’m happy to say he exceeded all of my expectations.
SR: Without giving too much away, how would you describe the tone of this film compared to previous Spider-Man stories?
Cretton: Peter’s not in high school anymore. Our story takes place about four years later. It’s that time in your mid-20s, when the harsh realities of life can sometimes slap you in the face. Peter is dealing with some real grown-up problems both personally and professionally, and for the first time, he’s learning how to deal with them completely on his own.
SR: What aspects of Peter Parker’s journey were most important for you to explore in this chapter?
Cretton: Peter is going through a stage that I think many of us can relate to right now. He’s living in the middle of NYC, surrounded by millions of people, yet somehow, he feels completely disconnected and alone. This is the first time we see Peter trying to live his life outside of his community of friends and family, and his isolation has some unexpected consequences that will complicate everything in his life.
SR: After No Way Home, this story seems to bring Spider-Man back to a more street-level world. How did you approach the visual language to reflect that shift?
Cretton: I was very excited to work with Brett Pawlak (Director of Photography) and Charlie Wood (Production Designer) to create an aesthetic that is both grounded and beautiful. We wanted to show Spider-Man adrift in New York City that showcases all of its imperfections.
SR: What do you hope audiences feel when they walk out of Brand New Day?
Cretton: This movie is about the importance of connecting with other people. There is no better place to experience it than in a theater full of people who might just be going through a stage in life similar to yours. And that by the time the credits roll, like Peter, people might feel a little more connected.
SR: What surprised you most about working on a Spider-Man film at this scale?
Cretton: I was surprised that on a film of this scale with this amount of budget and a huge crew, that I still found myself surrounded by really wonderful, thoughtful, kind, collaborators who wanted to make a great movie and have a lot of fun doing it.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
