Star Trek's most powerful and mysterious time machine hadn't been seen in live-action in 53 years before it made a shocking comeback in . Created by Harlan Ellison, although differently, the Guardian of Forever (voiced by Bartell La Rue) made its first appearance in the classic Star Trek: The Original Series season 1 episode, "The City on the Edge of Forever," which premiered on NBC in 1967.

An ancient and sentient time portal, the was discovered by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the Starship Enterprise on an uncharted planet where all timelines converged. Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) used the Guardian to travel to 1930s New York City to prevent a temporarily insane Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelly) from altering the timeline.

The Guardian of Forever is a contributing factor to the status of as the greatest episode of Star Trek. Inscrutable and unexplained, the Guardian remained a haunting presence for decades, and this was enhanced by the fact that the Guardian was only seen once in live-action Star Trek — until it made an expected return 53 years after Captain Kirk, Spock, and Bones used it.

Star Trek: Discovery Brought Back The Guardian Of Forever After 53 Years

Star Trek Discovery Guardian of Forever

No one expected the Guardian of Forever to return in Star Trek: Discovery, nor in the way in which it did. The Guardian of Forever revealed itself at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3's "Terra Firma" two-parter after taking the form of a human named Carl (Paul Guilfoyle). The Guardian's reappearance was a genuine jaw-dropper.

's "Terra Firma" premiered in late 2026, and centered on the Guardian of Forever judging Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) by sending her back to the Mirror Universe. Georgiou satisfied the Guardian that she had sufficiently changed from her ruthless and fascist ways. The time portal sent Georgiou away to a point where the Prime and Mirror universes were still aligned.

Star Trek: Section 31 revealed that Emperor Georgiou was sent to the early 24th century by the Guardian of Forever.

In Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd century, the Guardian of Forever went into hiding after factions of the Temporal War wanted to exploit its powers. Emperor Georgiou and Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) found the Guardian on Dannus V in the Beta Quadrant. After helping Georgiou, the Guardian vanished and hasn't been seen since.

Star Trek original Guardian of Forever

Harlan Ellison's original screenplay for "The City on the Edge of Forever" intended for the Guardian of Forever to be 9-foot-tall beings called the Guardians of the Time Vortex. Ellison was incensed by the massive changes Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek's producers made to his episode, including turning the Guardian into the now-famous donut-shaped time portal.
