After leaked online, Paramount is now investigating the situation with months to go until the film is released on the company's streaming platform.
According to , Paramount is currently investigating how Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender was leaked online, as the entertainment company continues to face backlash for its decision not to release the movie in theaters. So far, Paramount sources have ruled out a vulnerable computer system as the cause of the leak.
ScreenRant reached out to Paramount for comment when the film first leaked, but did not hear back.
This film has been shrouded in scandal for a long time now. Paramount initially planned an October 2026 theatrical (which was originally called The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender), but it was delayed twice: first to early 2026, then to October 2026. The company then pulled the project from its theatrical calendar, making the decision to release it on Paramount+ instead.
Director Lauren Montgomery revealed that the film will still come out this October, despite this unexpected shakeup. Post-production officially wrapped in early March, and Montgomery said at the time that Aang deserves to be seen on the big screen and claimed Paramount's decision wasn't the result of a low-quality final product.
That backlash wasn't the only headache that Paramount executives have had to deal with when it comes to Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender. A social media user on X, ImStillDissin, recently started leaking clips from the film online that featured Dave Bautista and Taika Waititi's characters after claiming that he was sent the full movie via e-mail.
The user claimed that he "decided I’d troll a little bit" by posting the two clips and didn't think it was a major issue since the film was not out yet. The clips had a #PeggleCrew watermark to reference the entity that sent him the leaked movie. Although they resisted posting the whole movie, it eventually made its way onto social media.
The leaked clips and full movie have since been removed from the social media platform and replaced with a notice saying that the "media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner." ImStillDissin decided not to leak the whole thing because they thought it was a “jackass thing to do to the animators.” They also elaborated that "Multiple people had access," which could explain the full movie being leaked.
Social media discussions are still raging in the Avatar fandom about whether the leaks happened because of Paramount's decision to completely bypass movie theaters. Paramount and Montgomery have yet to publicly comment on the leaks.
Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender is expected to continue the story first told in , an anime-inspired TV series that originally aired from 2005 to 2008. The show's protagonist, a boy named Aang, attempts to master the elements of air, earth, fire and water.
After becoming a hit with viewers and critics alike (and earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes), Nickelodeon created the that aired for four seasons.
M. Night Shyamalan directed a live-action adaptation of the beloved series that grossed $319 million at the box office but was panned by critics and audiences. Fourteen years later, Netflix premiered its own live-action TV show adaptation that has received mixed-to-positive reviews. will be released on June 25, 2026.
Alongside the live-action series, Paramount has been moving forward with an expansion of the animation wing of the franchise by developing Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender, and a new show called Avatar: Seven Havens.
Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender will be released in October 2026 on Paramount+.
