An adaptation of the Steven Spielberg classic is in the works.
Released in May 1995, with Brad Silberling behind the camera as director, the supernatural comedy was a big hit. It grossed more than $290 million at the box office against its $55 million budget, helping to launch stars out of . Spielberg was behind the camera as well, serving as executive producer via his Amblin Entertainment production company.
Deadline reports that a live-action television show adaptation of Casper is in development at Disney+. Although little is known about the project at this point, since it is in the early stages, it's described as a modern take that has a gritty tone similar to Netflix's Wednesday.
Spielberg is once again among the executive producers. He will be in that position alongside fellow executive producers Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, who previously helped to showrun the two-season reboot of . The adaptation hails from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Disney+ won the project in what's described as a competitive five-way bidding war.
Falling along the same lines as the Spielberg-produced film, the new Casper show is expected to feature CGI effects. It will be written by Winston and Letterman, with Letterman also directing. If the project does move forward, it will be notable for Disney+ because the character is not based on Disney's IP. The character first appeared in a string of animated shorts by Famous Studios before being acquired by Harvey Comics, publishing their titles starting in 1952.
1995's Casper was released by Universal Pictures. Because of its box office success, there was a that ultimately didn't move forward. There were, nonetheless, animated sequels and spinoffs that went direct to video. There have also been previous reports of a live-action TV series adaptation planned for Peacock. However, that attempt likewise didn't get off the ground.
Written by Sherri Stoner and Deanna Oliver, with the cast also including Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, and Eric Idle, along with the voices of Joe Nipote, Joe Alaskey, and Brad Garrett, has proven to be a genre hit that's been tough to recreate on the same level. It legged out to over $100 million domestically, after debuting to $16 million.
As it attempts to be competitive in the young adult genre space, Disney has the tricky task of bringing the friendly ghost back to life. But given the talent involved, this new take on Casper just might work.
