We might still be in the early days of season 2's story, but speculation is already mounting about what is coming in season 3. After resurrecting the former Marvel Netflix series in 2026, Marvel Studios has wasted no time confirming Daredevil and Kingpin's rivalry will continue. and filming has already started.
Since season 2 is only three episodes in, official details on the next season are still being closely guarded by Marvel. It's known that Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio are already back at work, and there's lots of speculation about who else might be appearing. And while Marvel has prevented any set photos from leaking online, Cox's look for season 3's production is public, and it could be quite telling.
Charlie Cox Is Filming Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 With A Full Beard
Thanks to Cox's responsibilities for promoting season 2 overlapping with filming new episodes, the actor's real-life appearance has garnered a lot of attention. He's been sporting a long, full beard the entire time since .
It's not unusual for Cox to have some facial hair when filming his MCU appearances. Matt frequently has some stubble, but his beard is typically very short. But with the actor making multiple press appearances recently, it is clear that the full beard is part of Matt's look for Daredevil: Born Again season 3. Whether that will be the case for the full season or just early on is unknown, but we can expect Matt to have this beard next season.
Notably, he might not be the only one with this look. D'Onofrio also had a full white beard on display during Born Again season 2 junkets, and he even said he couldn't answer questions from about whether that look was meant for season 3.
It appears that both Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk will forgo their cleaner appearances after season 2. The question is, why? It seems unlikely that both characters will grow beards at the same time just for fun. Instead, it could come from them having less access to ways to maintain their normal features.
Charlie Cox's New Look May Mean Born Again Season 3 Is Adapting The Devil In Cell Block D
One place that could explain Matt (and Fisk) having a beard is prison. Rather than both being on the run, they could both be locked up and left without razors and other means to shave. Daredevil and Kingpin getting put behind bars at the same time may then mean that Born Again season 3 is adapting the six-issue comic arc known as "The Devil In Cell Block D."
Running through Daredevil (Vol. 2) #82-87 in 2006, the story fell within Ed Brubaker's beloved run of Marvel's main Daredevil series. The story builds off a previous arc where Matt winds up in prison on Ryker Island after Kingpin outs him as Daredevil. He then spends these six issues trying to survive prison attacks and make people believe he isn't Daredevil.
The prison setting brings Matt into contact with Fisk again, while Bullseye and Punisher both become inmates at different points, too. It also coincides with Foggy seemingly dying while visiting Matt in prison, and Danny Rand suits up as Daredevil to help Matt preserve his secret identity.
While Matt doesn't have a full beard in these specific comics, it is easy to explain why that could be responsible for his new look in season 3. The facial hair can be a way to show how long he's been locked up and how he's become more unkempt in prison.
It's also worth noting that Cox has described filming scenes for Born Again season 3 that would fit the prison setting. He told , "I did a sequence for season 3 where I don't have the glasses on, I'm not in the suit. And that's challenging cause I've gotta throw kicks and punch, but also not be looking at them."
Matt having a fight scene where he's not in the Daredevil suit and doesn't have glasses on could make sense in prison. It's unusual for Matt to fight in public without one of those on in his normal life, as it raises the likelihood of someone learning how much he can sense while being blind. Being attacked during his time in prison could explain why he doesn't have either on.
Other explanations could explain Cox's comments and fresh appearance, but Born Again season 3 tackling The Devil In Cell Block D also seemingly tracks with the direction of the show.
How The MCU Can Do Daredevil's Prison Arc (& How Season 2 Can Set It Up)
Right now, Matt and Fisk are still at odds in a very public fashion, with both using their individual power and influence to try and bring the other down. It's easy to imagine that Born Again season 2 concludes with Fisk finally outing Daredevil's secret identity. This would make Matt's trial and sentencing one of the big final shoes to drop, teeing up the prison setting for the next batch of episodes.

Similarly, it is not far-fetched to imagine someone backstabs Fisk and he gets put behind bars again, too. That could explain why Cox told that season 3 has "shed the skin of the Mayor Fisk era." If Fisk isn't New York City's mayor anymore (as ), then it only makes sense it's because his criminal activities are brought to light and he's imprisoned.
The MCU already has many wheels in motion for a rather faithful The Devil In Cell Block D adaptation in Born Again season 3, too. Bullseye and Punisher could easily return as fellow inmates. Meanwhile, Karen Page, Jessica Jones, Kirsten McDuffie, BB Urich, and others spearhead clearing Matt's name in the public.
As for the new Daredevil, that could go in a few different directions. Someone like Swordsman or Bullseye could try to wear the suit to help Matt. But this could also be a way to explain how Danny Rand comes back into the MCU if they want to follow the comics. If Marvel and Sony made a groundbreaking deal, they could even have Peter Parker help out Matt in this way.
Netflix's Daredevil already put Kingpin in prison during season 2 at the same time as Punisher, but it'd be quite exciting for Daredevil: Born Again season 3 to make it Matt vs. Fisk in jail for a majority of the story. And based on Cox's current look, that may just be the direction we're heading.
