There may be more on the horizon.
Based on the cult classic 1996 Coen brothers movie of the same name, the Noah Hawley TV series premiered on FX in 2014, quickly becoming a win for the channel. The anthology show returned for a successful season 5 in late 2026, but there has since been no confirmation of a .
Now, speaking with , Hawley provides a promising update on Fargo's future. Both he and FX are interested in seeing the show continue, Hawley confirms, but his work on Alien: Earth season 2 and the upcoming Far Cry show make doing another season of the Coen adaptation a bit of a balancing act.
“Those are conversations that are still ongoing – where it could fit," Hawley says. “I hope to have an announcement about it soon. It’s great to see the enthusiasm is still there.”
The news about season 6 follows a glowing reception to . Starring Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, Sam Spruell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the latest season scored 93% on for its story of a Midwestern housewife who is forced to use her surprising survival skills to protect her family after her abusive sheriff ex-husband catches up with her.
Though FX and Hawley may be keen on continuing the series, it's unclear when Fargo season 6 could actually move forward. FX has seemingly made Alien: Earth season 2 a priority after the success of season 1 last year. The Alien show premiered with 9.2 million global viewers across Disney+, Hulu, and FX within its first six days, making it a major hit.
Filming on is expected to commence in London in May. A May production start could suggest a premiere date in 2027 is likely, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.
In addition to overseeing the continuation of the Alien series, Hawley is also set to serve as creator and showrunner of Far Cry. Scheduled to start shooting after Alien: Earth season 2, this show is also an adaptation, this time of Ubisoft's popular adventure-survival video game series.
To avoid stretching himself too thin, Hawley confirms to Deadline that he will only direct the first two episodes of Far Cry and that he has co-showrunners for both this series and for Alien: Earth. Of the workload, Hawley explains:
“I’ve built them both out of London at Pinewood and there is a secondary location that will serve both shows. I’ve tried to be smart about it. We have most of Alien written and we’re halfway through the other show. Once we have the scripts, it’s less my job and more someone else’s."
Still, shepherding two series along at different points in their production and post-production pipelines essentially simultaneously casts doubt on anything Fargo-related happening anytime soon. Even if a season 6 announcement arrives in the next few months, filming on new episodes almost certainly wouldn't happen until some point next year, meaning a 2028 return for the show is about the earliest viewers can hope for.
As an anthology series that features a new cast and story each season, a five-year gap between is less of an issue than it would be for a show with more serialized seasons, but it's still a hefty wait. Given the strong reception to the series thus far, however, there's certainly reason to believe season 6 will be a hit regardless of how many years it takes.
