is poised to break a long-standing tradition for the HBO Max comedy drama.
Series stars Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart have confirmed that will break a series-long tradition between Ava and Deborah. The premise of the comedy-focused series has always seen Einbinder's Ava Daniels and Smart's Deborah Vance at odds with one another, reflective of their tumultuous relationship throughout the show.
However, season 5 will see a core change in this dynamic. In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Einbinder confirmed that, despite the fight Ava and Deborah got into during the end of season 4, Hacks season 5 will see the pair on the same side. This includes having similar objectives, which will also push Ava forward as a character:
ScreenRant: Deborah and Ava almost had another breakup at the end of season 4 before the false alarm rerouted us. How stable would you say their dynamic is going into the final season?
Hannah Einbinder: I would say that it's really strong. I think they're on the same team. And they're able to just attack all of these goals together, which is nice.
ScreenRant: Before stepping into this season, did you have any lingering questions for Ava for her arc that you hoped to tackle?
Hannah Einbinder: All I was really after was my hope for her that she is good, and that she ends up in a place that feels fulfilling for her. And that was all I really thought about, because every season I've gone into it hoping she's doing well and hoping she gets treated with respect. And so I always just go in open-minded because the plot is always handled so beautifully.
Smart echoes the same sentiment as Einbinder, confirming that season 5 will see Deborah realize just how well she works together with Ava, and how important having that dynamic will be going into the final stretch of the show. She makes their dynamic seem almost familial in structure, which may reflect how they develop into the final episodes:
ScreenRant: Speaking of Ava, Jean: Deborah and Ava kind of almost broke up again at the end of last season until the fake death alert resolved it. How stable is that dynamic going into this season?
Jean Smart: Oh, I think the stakes are so high for Deborah that she really has to really admit to Ava and mostly to herself, how much she needs Ava. Really needs Ava. When people need each other, that creates a very strong bond. It's sort of like the mother and child dynamic.
with Ava and Deborah getting into a major fight with one another after the latter gets drunk, criticizing the younger comedian's career in the process. However, the next day, newspapers falsely report that Deborah is dead, with an obituary insulting to her own career. This lays the groundwork for the pair finally coming together after all this time.
The confirms Deborah is going back to Las Vegas, on a mission to redefine her legacy and ensure she's remembered for the good in her career instead of the bad. Ava accompanies her as an ally this time around, something that differentiates from previous seasons where the pair have found themselves at each other's throats.
It marks a fitting end for the long-running HBO Max original series, which has, over time, become the longest-running show exclusive to the streaming platform. It's also earned plenty of critical success, too: Smart has won four consecutive Emmys for her performance, while seasons 1 and 3 won Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.

Based on both Einbinder and Smart's statements about the upcoming episodes, it seems like the will include some of the closest moments between Ava and Deborah the show has ever seen. It also has a complete, one-track focus to its main storyline that, as a whole, will likely help the two characters redefine their comedy careers together.

Given the award-winning nature of Hacks so far, Einbinder and Smart's statements are strong indicators the series will have a fitting conclusion. Ava and Deborah may not always have seen eye-to-eye, but this latest revelation about their relationship signals a strength that will be a defining factor for how the series ends.
