The trailer for season one of HBO's series is exciting, but I'm already worried about the show's long-term release schedule. The adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone premieres on December 25, 2026, and HBO is already looking ahead to next season. HBO is committed to all seven books, but time isn't on their side.
The biggest downside to the streaming era has been its lengthy delays. The appeal of TV is that shows return year after year, but that isn't the case anymore. With soaring budgets and productions that put even the biggest Hollywood blockbusters to shame, TV has nearly leapfrogged its big screen counterpart. This doesn't bode well for HBO's Harry Potter.
HBO's Chairman Confirmed That Harry Potter Won't Be A Yearly Release
In the hysteria caused by the season one trailer, HBO Chairman Casey Bloys made a series of statements regarding the future of the Harry Potter series. Bloys bluntly insisted that the show wouldn't release seasons on a yearly clip, something that understandably caused an uproar. shortly after that didn't help to assuage fears.
In his follow-up comment, Bloys said: "Our goal is to not have a huge gap...especially because the kids are growing. It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive." The chairman didn't specify what his idea of a "huge gap" actually is, and therein lies the most worrying part of the show's future.
Bloys is correct that the show is a massive undertaking, but it's clear that he's already trying to insulate it from the usual criticisms of streaming TV. As illustrated with Stranger Things, shows can easily get way out of hand with bloated budgets and unlimited timelines. had gaps too, but they never exceeded a year.
If each season maintains the eight-episode length, that means they'll each be at least eight hours long. That's about four times the length of each movie, and should theoretically take at least four times as long to make. This lends credence to Bloys' warning, but it might not be sustainable over the course of a decade.
I’m Worried About Harry Potter’s Release Schedule
HBO has lofty plans to adapt all seven Harry Potter books, but it might not be possible if the proposed release timeline is correct. Even if there is only one additional year between each season, that would completely derail the series. 12 years to make seven seasons isn't great, especially considering the fact that is quite important to the story.
The purpose of the remake is to allow a new generation of fans to grow up with Harry. That isn't possible if the show stretches on till 2038. For reference, Dominic McLaughlin (the actor playing Harry) will be at least 24 by the time the seventh season premieres. That's several years older than Daniel Radcliffe in Deathly Hallows Part 2.
There's no doubt that die-hard fans will tune in until the end, but it adds to . All this assumes that there are no delays in production, which is an impossible dream. Recasting might also be necessary, especially with the new Dumbledore, John Lithgow, already in his 80s.
HBO's lofty hopes for the Harry Potter series are commendable, but it's built on a shaky foundation. It has always been necessary to cut corners in TV production to get episodes out on time and on budget. To do that would rob Harry Potter of its magic, but the alternative means a potential quagmire of missed deadlines and lost interest.
