Warning: Spoilers ahead for Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair! marks the official return of the beloved Fox sitcom from the early 2000s, but the show's future beyond the latest Hulu revival is still up in the air. After years of rumors, to happen. It was a relief for fans of the original to see so many original characters return for Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, considering how much time has passed.

When Malcolm in the Middle ran for six seasons on Fox, it was a very different time. However, the sitcom focusing on Malcolm and his dysfunctional family is still just as intriguing today as it was in 2000 when the show debuted. In addition to serving as a modern chapter of the original, Life's Still Unfair was released on Hulu, allowing the show to fully embrace the streaming era with its return.

With everything it took for the sitcom to return, it's surprising that Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair is only four episodes, which will likely lead to viewers wondering if the revival is set to return for more episodes in the future. Technically, Hulu's Malcolm in the Middle revival is a miniseries, meaning it was intentionally made for a limited return. Granted, there's still a possibility that Life's Still Unfair could return for more episodes in some form.

Instead of a full-fledged revival, Malcolm in the Middle's revival is more like a streaming special, with the four episodes totaling around two hours. For those hoping for more of the comedy, there's a chance, according to members of the cast and crew. Creator Linwood Boomer revealed to that any continuation of Malcolm in the Middle depends on Life's Still Unfair's viewership:

"Well, it depends on how it does. There's a certain number, and I don't even know what it is, and I don't even know what it's measuring, but some piece of data has to hit a certain number, and if it's one shy, they won't ask, and if it's one over, they will ask, but not until then.

We all had a great time. Everyone had a great time. It was a really good working experience, which I was nervous about after having been retired for so long and happily out of the business. Disney and 20th were terrific. They were great to work with."

When , he shared that he views the revival as "a one-and-done." Granted, things could change very fast, especially if viewership does well, and Boomer doesn't necessarily close the door on season 2 or another type of spinoff.

As part of 's cover story for the revival, the possibility of a reboot also came up, with the focus shifting to Malcolm's daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten). Executive producer Tracy Katsky Boomer shared that Karsten "could absolutely hold a show," with Jane Kaczmarkek, who plays Lois, providing more justification for another chapter of the show after Life's Still Unfair, saying, "It's a whole new set of characters and circumstances that are ripe."

Branching off with Leah in the focus would be a fresh way to continue the series, while also allowing core characters from the original show to appear in some capacity. Netflix did something similar with That '90s Show by centering on the teenage daughter of original That '70s Show characters, while incorporating a mix of new and returning characters.

As for how Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair could continue, the revival's ending already paves the way for a continuation. By the fourth episode of Life's Still Unfair, which essentially concludes the revival, Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) reunites with his family for his parents' 40th wedding anniversary. It also allows him to acknowledge how horribly he has been treating his family, including his daughter, whom he kept a secret from his family her entire life, and vice versa.

It's clear the family will never be perfect, but the ending leaves the door open for Malcolm and Leah to be more present in everyone else's lives. Even if the show leans more into Leah than Malcolm, there's no reason future episodes couldn't show her getting to know Hal (Bryan Cranston), Lois, and Malcolm's five siblings as she also deals with her own trials and tribulations of being a teenager.

Another sequel could also give viewers a better chance to reconnect with characters like Francis (Christopher Masterson) and Reese (Justin Berfield), while giving Jamie (Anthony Timpano) and Kelly (Vaughan Murrae) more character development. With just four episodes, the revival can only scratch the surface with its new characters, and there's an obvious limit to how much the show can update fans on what's been going on with the returning characters after 20 years.

Of course, one major selling point for a continuation of the Malcolm in the Middle revival would be more of Hal, seeing as . His return would be an absolute must alongside Kazcmarek's Lois. While Dewey's presence in the revival is limited to Zoom calls, he could have a more direct role if the revival continues now that Caleb Ellsworth-Clark portrays the character, not the original actor, Erik Per Sullivan. Though there are many directions the revival can take, the futures of all characters will still come down to how Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair's initial four episodes perform.
