When you've been around as long as has, you learn a thing or three about fan theories. The best-selling franchise goes back decades at this point, and in that time, millions of fans have rallied some wild speculation about its video games. From hidden spouses to evil clones, the Resident Evil fandom knows how to cook up some good fan theories, and some of them have been pretty spot on. Now, one of the franchise's best directors is speaking out as Hideki Kamiya just confirmed another theory about Leon Kennedy is 100% true.
The confession comes from as the acclaimed director of Resident Evil 2 finally confessed the true inspiration behind Leon's now-iconic name. According to him, the protagonist for , and Kamiya went to series creator Shinji Mikami for help naming the hero. The director's first few names were shot down, but after thinking about it for a moment, Kamiya said he was inspired to pitch the name Leon because of a movie he had seen recently.
As it turns out, Kamiya had watched Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional while developing Resident Evil 2, and the film's titular character stuck with him. Kamiya asked Mikami if the name Leon would work for the protagonist, and he was given the go-ahead. The simple question went on to birth in video game history. For years, fans have speculated about the origins of Leon's name, and some fans questioned whether Besson's cult classic movie was involved. Now, those fans can rest easy as Kamiya just confirmed their hunch was correct.
The theory regarding Léon: The Professional has been around for years, and fans have a specific Resident Evil gun to thank for the tip. After all, later in the franchise, Leon can unlock a gun named Matilda, which is a certified fan-fave. In Léon: The Professional, the hitman adopts a young girl named Mathilda, who is played by Natalie Portman of all people. Resident Evil's iconic gun, Matilda, is a reference to Besson's movie as Leon was given his own girl to protect. Or rather, in this case, to protect him from a horde of zombies.
Leon's cinematic influence proves the Resident Evil franchise is more closely attached to Hollywood than most fans suspected. Since the Capcom franchise debuted, the horror series has made its love for movies clear. It is impossible to play Resident Evil's earliest titles and not see movies such as Dawn of the Dead mirrored. In more recent entries, from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Shining. Clearly, Léon: The Professional is in good company when it comes to inspiring Resident Evil.

As for Leon himself, the character may not have much in common with Besson's protagonist outside Matilda, but his story is far from over. The hero just made a puts the grizzled bio-terrorist agent center stage. Infected with a virus stemming from Raccoon City, Leon's investigation leads him to a young FBI agent named Grace who finds herself mixed up in Umbrella's deadly plot.
