We may finally know when is coming to the Switch 2, thanks to a new report by an industry insider. Nintendo's crossover platform series, which , has made an appearance in every console generation since. Along with Zelda and Animal Crossing, it's one of the most anticipated releases for the Switch 2.

But when could Smash actually come to Switch 2? Until today, it was anyone's guess. But now, new information by an industry insider suggests a follow-up to the Switch's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could be closer than we think.

A post on by industry insider Reece "Kiwi Talkz" Reilly, embedded above, implies a Smash Bros. game could be released sometime in the next two years (spotted by ). It's one of four major releases Reilly says he's currently anticipating, alongside GTA 6 this November, Zelda next year (), and Metroid "on the near horizon."

It's a compelling theory, but don't get your hopes up just yet. We know so little about this potential new Smash project, and there are many things it could potentially be that would leave fans disappointed.

For what it's worth, Reilly is a fairly reliable source, known for his interviews with game developers. While he naturally doesn't cite his own source for any of this information, it's safe to say it probably wasn't pulled out of thin air.

But in a follow-up Tweet, Reilly does clarify, "Nowhere in the tweet did I say any of these games are NEW. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't but I was vague for good reason to protect devs, it could be new, it could be a spinoff, it could be a remaster, it could be something on NSO."

Now, that could refer to any of the games listed above, so it's anyone's guess whether it even refers to Smash Bros. in the first place. It's entirely possible that this mysterious upcoming Smash release could just be one of the older games , or even just a Switch 2 upgrade of Ultimate.

Still, a totally new Smash game would fit the narrative. Last summer, Reilly claimed that Smash creator Masahiro Sakurai had already signed on to make a new Smash game. Reilly claimed it was a "negotiating tactic": Sakurai was so "burned out from working on Smash Bros. constantly since 2012," so he agreed to work on another Smash game only on the condition that he could release Kirby Air Riders first (via ).

So, while we may have a new Smash game to look forward to before the end of 2028, it's hard to say with any certainty whether it'll be an original title or just a Switch 2 re-release. We'll keep a close eye on Nintendo Directs to see when the next Super Smash Bros. update is announced.
