Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Maul - Shadow Lord season 1, episode 8.Anakin Skywalker is a legendary character and one of the most tragic figures in all of Star Wars, but Disney and Lucasfilm have replaced him as the most tragic villain in the galaxy far, far away. In many ways, Anakin Skywalker's journey in the is the gold standard of what a tragic villain is. He begins as a hero only to fall victim to his own fatal character flaws, like his attachment to Padmé Amidala, and he ends up losing everything and becoming an antagonist.
There's no denying that Anakin is the main tragic villain of Star Wars. He's the main character of the prequel trilogy, the main antagonist of the original trilogy, and the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. There's also no denying the emotional weight of Anakin's story. There's no other character in Star Wars who is as empathetic, complex, and heartbreaking as him. In the modern sense of the word, Anakin is as tragic as it gets.

Trivia Challenge ⚔Dark LordsUnlimited power ⚡PowerForce lightning 📘LoreHolocrons 🗡BetrayalAlways two 🌈LegacyThe dark side EMBRACE THE DARK SIDE → QUESTION 1 / 8LORE 01 The Sith operate under a strict doctrine that limits their number to prevent infighting and self-destruction. This ancient code dictates that there can only be a master and an apprentice — no more, no less. What is this fundamental Sith principle called? AThe Sith Code BThe Rule of Power CThe Rule of Two DThe Dark Doctrine ✓ Correct! The Rule of Two states “Always two there are — no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.” As Yoda himself observed, this principle ensured the Sith could operate in secret for a millennium while plotting the downfall of the Jedi Order. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is the Rule of Two. While the Sith Code exists separately as their philosophical creed, the Rule of Two is the specific doctrine limiting Sith to a master-apprentice pair. It allowed them to hide in the shadows for a thousand years. NEXT → QUESTION 2 / 8DARK LORDS 02 The most powerful Sith Lord in the saga hid in plain sight as a seemingly benevolent politician, secretly manipulating the Clone Wars from both sides. He orchestrated the fall of the Republic and the destruction of the Jedi Order. Who is this ultimate Sith Master? ADarth Vader BDarth Sidious (Palpatine) CDarth Tyranus DDarth Plagueis ✓ Correct! Darth Sidious, publicly known as Senator and later Emperor Palpatine, is the mastermind behind everything. He engineered the Clone Wars, executed Order 66, turned Anakin Skywalker to the dark side, and ruled the galaxy as Emperor for over two decades. Ian McDiarmid’s portrayal is iconic. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Darth Sidious, also known as Emperor Palpatine. Darth Vader was his apprentice, Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku) was a pawn, and Darth Plagueis was his former master. Sidious was the puppet master who destroyed the Republic from within. NEXT → QUESTION 3 / 8BETRAYAL 03 Once the most promising Jedi Knight in the Order, this Chosen One was seduced to the dark side by Palpatine’s promise of saving his wife from death. After his devastating duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, he was rebuilt in a black life-support suit. Which Sith Lord is this? ADarth Maul BDarth Revan CDarth Bane DDarth Vader ✓ Correct! Darth Vader, born Anakin Skywalker, is the tragic heart of the Star Wars saga. His fall from heroic Jedi to Sith enforcer — and his ultimate redemption when he saves his son Luke by destroying the Emperor — is one of cinema’s greatest character arcs. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Darth Vader. Darth Maul was Sidious’s first apprentice, Darth Revan is from the Old Republic era, and Darth Bane created the Rule of Two. Only Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader after his fall on Mustafar. NEXT → QUESTION 4 / 8DARK LORDS 04 This fearsome, red-and-black-tattooed Zabrak wielded a double-bladed lightsaber and killed Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace. Though cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, he survived through sheer hatred and returned with mechanical legs. Who is this relentless Sith assassin? ADarth Maul BSavage Opress CAsajj Ventress DThe Grand Inquisitor ✓ Correct! Darth Maul was Palpatine’s first known apprentice, a weapon of pure rage trained from childhood. His survival after being bisected — fueled entirely by hatred for Obi-Wan — led to his expanded story in The Clone Wars and Rebels, where he became one of Star Wars’ most compelling villains. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Darth Maul. Savage Opress was Maul’s brother, Asajj Ventress was Dooku’s dark side assassin, and the Grand Inquisitor served the Empire. Only Maul wielded the iconic double-bladed saber and killed Qui-Gon Jinn in that legendary duel. NEXT → QUESTION 5 / 8BETRAYAL 05 This elegant former Jedi Master left the Order and became Sidious’s second apprentice, taking the Sith name Darth Tyranus. A master of Form II lightsaber combat with a curved-hilt saber, he led the Separatist movement. Played by Christopher Lee, who is this aristocratic Sith Lord? AMace Windu BQui-Gon Jinn CCount Dooku (Darth Tyranus) DGeneral Grievous ✓ Correct! Count Dooku, Darth Tyranus, was the political face of the Separatist movement and a pawn in Sidious’s grand plan. A former student of Yoda himself, Dooku’s elegant fencing style and aristocratic demeanor made him unique among the Sith. Palpatine ordered Anakin to execute him in Revenge of the Sith. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Count Dooku, also known as Darth Tyranus. Mace Windu was a Jedi Master, Qui-Gon was Obi-Wan’s master killed by Maul, and General Grievous was a cyborg commander but not Force-sensitive. Dooku was the fallen Jedi who became Sidious’s Sith apprentice. NEXT → QUESTION 6 / 8LORE 06 Approximately a thousand years before the events of the saga, one ancient Sith Lord recognized that the Sith kept destroying themselves through infighting. He wiped out the existing Sith Order and established the Rule of Two, ensuring the dark side would be passed from master to apprentice in secret. Who created this doctrine? ADarth Revan BDarth Bane CDarth Nihilus DDarth Malgus ✓ Correct! Darth Bane, who appeared as a Force ghost in The Clone Wars, was the visionary who realized the Sith’s numbers were their weakness. By limiting them to two, he ensured each generation would be stronger than the last — a chain that ultimately led to Palpatine’s galaxy-conquering scheme a millennium later. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Darth Bane. Darth Revan was a legendary Sith from the Old Republic, Darth Nihilus consumed entire planets through the Force, and Darth Malgus led the Sith Empire. But it was Bane who created the Rule of Two that shaped all Sith to follow. NEXT → QUESTION 7 / 8LEGACY 07 In the sequel trilogy, the grandson of Darth Vader was seduced to the dark side by Supreme Leader Snoke. He wielded an unstable, crossguard lightsaber with a cracked kyber crystal and killed his own father, Han Solo, in The Force Awakens. Who is this conflicted dark side warrior? ASupreme Leader Snoke BGeneral Hux CDarth Revan DKylo Ren (Ben Solo) ✓ Correct! Kylo Ren, born Ben Solo to Han Solo and Leia Organa, was torn between the light and dark throughout the sequel trilogy. His worship of his grandfather Vader’s legacy and his crackling crossguard saber made him visually iconic. Like Vader before him, he ultimately found redemption, sacrificing himself to save Rey. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Kylo Ren, born Ben Solo. Snoke was his dark side mentor (later revealed as a Palpatine puppet), General Hux was a First Order officer, and Darth Revan existed thousands of years earlier. Kylo Ren carried the Skywalker bloodline’s burden into the sequel era. NEXT → QUESTION 8 / 8POWER 08 In one of the saga’s most chilling scenes, Palpatine tells Anakin the “Tragedy” of a Sith Lord so powerful he could use the Force to influence midi-chlorians to create life and prevent death. His apprentice killed him in his sleep. Who is this legendary Sith whose tale tempted Anakin to the dark side? ADarth Plagueis the Wise BDarth Bane CDarth Vitiate DDarth Sion ✓ Correct! “Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?” is one of the most meme-worthy and narratively crucial lines in Star Wars. Plagueis was Palpatine’s own master, and the irony is thick — Palpatine tells Anakin the story as bait, having murdered Plagueis himself. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. ✗ Your lack of faith is disturbing! The answer is Darth Plagueis the Wise. Darth Bane created the Rule of Two centuries earlier, Darth Vitiate ruled the Old Republic Sith Empire, and Darth Sion was sustained by pain. Plagueis could cheat death itself — ironic, since he couldn’t save himself from his own apprentice, Palpatine. In the more classical sense of the word tragic, however, another character has Anakin beat, and is proving it. Ancient Greek tragedies like the myth of Sisyphus were often so emotionally devastating because characters were doomed to fail. Try as they might, they couldn't buck their own fate and character flaws to change their destiny. Maul, not Anakin, has become Star Wars' version of a tragic villain in the Greek sense.
Maul Has Become A Much More Tragic Villain Than Anakin In Recent Years
As Freddie Prinze Jr., the voice actor of Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars Rebels, once so saliently pointed out, Maul is basically a figure ripped straight from the pages of a Greek tragedy. The entire point of this character is that he's doomed to fail constantly. He was originally built up by Darth Sidious in The Phantom Menace, only to be literally cut down by Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Duel of the Fates.
Maul's next appearance in The Clone Wars built him up once again. It gave him his brother, Savage Opress, gave him back his legs, and gave him back his life. Maul even managed to establish the Shadow Collective and lead a successful takeover of Mandalore. Then, everything Maul built was shattered once again by Ahsoka Tano and Order 66. By the time he crops up in Rebels, Maul has nothing left, and he's condemned to wander the galaxy in search of the Sith holocron.
Rebels took everything from Maul, including his life. Just when we thought he couldn't lose anything else, Maul is literally cut down once again, and again by Obi-Wan Kenobi. His greatest adversary, the man he has hated more than anything in the galaxy, takes his life in an anticlimactic and somber final lightsaber duel. For decades now, Star Wars has been doing everything in its power to make Maul as tragic as possible.
Maul's Star Wars story is now even more tragic than Anakin's. Anakin, at least, got his moment of redemption in Return of the Jedi. He was able to finally fight his fate, overcome the Darth Vader persona, throw the Emperor into the reactor, and save his beloved son. Anakin was reborn just before he died, and he died in a moment of pure triumph and familial love, cradled in the arms of his long-lost son who believed there was good in him.
Maul had no such consolation prize to dull the sting of his tragedy. He died in the arms of an enemy, alone in a cold desert, after watching everything he ever worked to achieve melt away in front of him. He lost everything. His status as a Sith, his brother, his criminal empire. Maul's life began in sorrow, was plagued by failure and defeat, and ended as grimly as it began. Anakin at least had moments of happiness with Padmé, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Luke; Maul had only hatred and pain.
Maul - Shadow Lord Will Cement Maul’s Tragic Status
The tragedy of Maul's story also isn't over yet. If fans weren't convinced that Maul is the most tragic character in Star Wars yet, Maul - Shadow Lord will cement his status because we already know where it will end. As of Shadow Lord episode 8, Maul is still consolidating power, trying to win over Devon Izara as his new apprentice, and generally on the rise once again. That's just the prelude to his status in Rebels, and it's just Star Wars' way of making Maul's fall hurt even more.
As previously mentioned, when viewers meet Maul in Rebels, he's wandering the galaxy as a hermit, alone and powerless. Because Maul - Shadow Lord takes place years earlier in the , that means Maul will lose all the power he's currently gathering in the show. Everything he's working towards, the Shadow Collective he's building and his emerging takeover of Crimson Dawn, will be gone at some point between Shadow Lord and Rebels.
Maul's coming downfall in Shadow Lord also has the potential to be the most devastating defeat he's ever suffered. Maul's defeat in The Phantom Menace at least gave way to him being resurrected. His defeat in The Clone Wars at least left the opportunity for him to rebuild the Shadow Collective. Even his death in Rebels had a sense of poetic justice, of Maul accepting his demise, and Obi-Wan gave him a glimmer of hope that Luke Skywalker would be able to succeed where he had failed.
Maul's defeat in Shadow Lord won't have any small comforts tied to it. All he has to look forward to after the Shadow Collective is disbanded yet again is a life spent wandering, alone. Sidious and the Sith have rebuked him. Savage has long been dead. Rook Kast and his Dathomiri brothers are dead or gone. The Shadow Collective will be dissolved. By the time Maul - Shadow Lord is over, Maul will truly have nothing but pain, hatred, and death at the hands of his most hated enemy to look forward to.
