creator R. Scott Gemmill has revealed the timeline and filming window for season 3 of the hit medical drama.

The hit medical drama, created by Gemmill, debuted on HBO Max on January 9, 2026, and received praise from the medical community for its accurate depiction of the challenges faced by medical professionals in America's healthcare system. The show has won three Primetime Emmys and two Golden Globes during its run, and is considered one of the greatest-ever medical dramas.

The is headed up by former ER alum Noah Wyle, and is known for its unique real-time storytelling approach, with each episode covering a single hour across a 15-hour working shift. The Pitt season 2 is currently airing on HBO Max. Ahead of season 2's January 8, 2026, premiere, The Pitt was renewed for a third season.

In an interview with , Gemmill discussed . Malkin revealed that Gemmill had also shared that The Pitt season 3 is due to kick off its new shooting schedule in June, and that the season will take place in November, apparently to incorporate "colder weather" into storylines.

While there are no details as yet about the storylines for season 3, there is a good bet that this change is something that is likely to influence the direction of the story. Given that a source reported that Ganesh's exit from the show was apparently story-driven, it's a good indicator that The Pitt is a show that's very deliberate with its decisions.

The choice to have the season take place in the fall and heading into winter could be a core part of what will shape the storyline of season 3, and something like a flu outbreak could be a prominent plot point. Colder weather can lead to more sickness, and this will likely be a core part of the plot that chooses to explore.

Elsewhere, Ayesha Harris' senior night shift resident, Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular for the upcoming season, and this could mean more Parker-focused stories. With filming due to start in a couple of months' time, The Pitt will need to iron out its plot for season 3 and ensure that the schedule supports the planned storylines.

The success of The Pitt has been rooted in its characters and strong story arcs, and there is hope that season 3 can live up to the high standards set by the first couple of seasons. The decision to set season 3 in November means that the colder weather could lead to a more anarchic real-time storyline, especially if Pittsburgh TMC has to deal with a flu outbreak.

The Pitt season 2 finale airs on April 16 on HBO Max.
