Three years of fans begging for one thing, and is finally delivering on it. Ever since Justin Harltey's lone-wolf series premiered in 2026, it has become the most-watched show on TV. Granted that the arrival of Taylor Sheridan's Marshals on CBS in the has given it a run for its money, Tracker's success cannot be denied. As its year slowly comes to a close, there's growing interest in what the future of the series will look like, especially since the last two off-seasons have been quite transformative.

With just a few episodes left in its run, is leaning heavily on solving the persistent Shaw family mystery at the center of the series. The death of its patriarch, Ashton, has haunted the clan for years, with the incident even driving a wedge between Colter and his older brother, Russell, played by Jensen Ackles. Amid all the build-up, one thing that is lost in discussions about the show this year is how CBS has finally started listening to feedback about a specific factor of the project. A new announcement makes it difficult to ignore, however.

Jensen Ackles' Russell Has An Expanded Role In Tracker Season 3

Hartley as the face of Tracker works really well, as evidenced by its success. That said, ever since Ackles debuted as Russell in "Off the Boots," it became immediately clear that he elevates the project in a way that no one else in the cast can. As a funnier and more laid-back character, he balances the younger Shaw brother's more serious demeanor. The result is always a great time whenever the pair come together. Because of that, calls for Ackles to appear in more episodes started. Unfortunately, Tracker seasons 1 and 2 kept his involvement limited, only appearing in one episode per year.

In one of the most unexpected twists of the 2026-2026 TV cycle, Tracker has officially marked the end of its best era, and it's because of CBS.

This has changed in Tracker season 3, as Russell has already appeared in two episodes, with another two more on the way. It was previously reported that the older Shaw brother is going to be in the finale, which makes sense, considering its teases about a major breakthrough in Ashton's death mystery. However, it's subsequently confirmed that as well. Based on the loglines for the episodes, the pair will be tackling two different cases, but their reunion is tied to Colter getting closer to finding out the truth about his dad.

As I've always said, . Unlike other procedurals on network TV, the CBS series is technically not an ensemble. Granted that Randy and Reenie are always ready to help with the cases, they do so remotely for the most part. Ultimately, the operation on the ground is just run by Colter on his own. Russell's increased appearances in Tracker season 3 could be an indication that CBS is shifting towards giving Hartley's character more regular partners on the road, which would be nice.

Seeing Ackles back in Tracker is never a bad thing, so if the network can bring him back for more episodes moving forward, that's going to be a win for everyone. That said, another possibility, although a bolder one, is the idea of CBS testing the potential for a spinoff starring Russell. The Eye network is famous for franchise expansion, and considering the success of Tracker, it's odd that they haven't tried further capitalizing on it, and right now, a procedural led by Ackles sounds like a great idea.
