After two years of leaving audiences on a major cliffhanger, season 2 is getting closer to arriving.

Originally created by Beau DeMayo, the Disney+ series serves as a sequel revival to the animated series that ended in the eponymous year, picking up a year after the original's ending and seeing the superhero team facing new threats while under the leadership of former nemesis Magneto while Xavier continues healing from his attempted assassination attempt. was a smash hit for Disney+, garnering a near-perfect 99% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and beating multiple viewership records set by fellow Marvel animated series, What If...?, securing a season 2 order well before its premiere.

Now, ahead of its planned Summer 2026 debut, X-Men '97 season 2 has officially landed a new premiere window, but with a slight cast as it will make its world premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Festival. The Marvel series has not yet set a specific date for its premiere at the New York City-based festival, though the event is slated to run from June 3–14, narrowing when it will screen. It joins a wide roster of shows screening at Tribeca, including FX's Adults season 2, Jemaine Clement's Alice and Steve and Survivor 50, among others.

The reveal that will premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June marks a promising sign of when the series will return on Disney+. Marvel had already confirmed that it would debut in the summer, while also moving ahead on season 3's production. While no specific premiere date has been set for its Tribeca showing, it does now seem likely that X-Men '97 will air sometime in July, giving roughly a month of breathing room and hype building from its festival premiere to its streaming one.

It would also make sense, given Marvel Studios has shifted to creating a gap of a couple of months between each new release on the streaming platform. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Wonder Man, which has a season 2 in development, made its debut in January before the highly-anticipated Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premiered in late March. The next major MCU Disney+ title is , which will debut on May 12, likely putting X-Men '97 season 2 in a late July or early August window.

But what I do best isn’t very nice.” You’re the fierce loner who acts first and philosophises later — but beneath that adamantium-plated exterior beats a heart that cares far more than you’d ever admit. You’ve been burned enough times to distrust the world, so you keep people at arm’s length, yet you’d throw yourself into any fight to protect the ones who slip past your defences. You don’t need a cause or a manifesto — you just need someone worth fighting for. Like Logan, your greatest strength isn’t your claws or your healing factor; it’s the stubborn refusal to let the people you love face danger alone. Fierce Protective Resilient Untamed 🧠 Professor X (Charles Xavier) “Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” You’re the visionary who sees the best in everyone — even when the world gives you every reason not to. Your greatest power isn’t telepathy; it’s an unshakeable belief that understanding and compassion can bridge any divide. You lead not through force but through hope, building bridges where others build walls. Some call you naive, but you know that real strength lies in extending a hand to your enemy. Like Charles Xavier, you carry the weight of a dream that most consider impossible, and you refuse to let it die. Visionary Empathetic Diplomatic Hopeful 🧲 Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr) “Peace was never an option.” You’re the survivor who learned the hardest lesson life has to offer: the world will not protect you, so you must protect yourself. Your conviction is unbreakable and your patience is terrifying — you’ll wait years to set the right plan in motion. You don’t hate humanity; you simply refuse to let your people be victims ever again. Every action you take, no matter how ruthless, is driven by a profound love for those who share your struggle. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you. Resolute Strategic Ruthless Unyielding ↻ PLAY AGAIN

Audiences have been clamoring for more of left the series with multiple cliffhangers. The titular team, having narrowly succeeded in preventing Bastion from using Asteroid M to wipe out the Earth, are scattered throughout time, with Cyclops and Jean in the destroyed future of 3960 A.D., while Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier and Magneto are in Ancient Egypt and meet the young version of Apocalypse. Additionally, a present-day Apocalypse picked up one of Gambit's playing cards, potentially hinting at his resurrection, while Wolverine was last seen still in a critical state.

Star Ross Marquand has remained particularly enthusiastic about what's to come from X-Men '97 season 2, having previously teased that will be one of the key elements going into the show's future. Additionally, with Marvel having confirmed season 3's development in March 2026 with What If...? alum Matthew Chauncey taking over as showrunner, the wait between seasons may not be as long as that of seasons 1 and 2, opening the door for plenty more of the X-Men before their live-action reboot in the MCU.
