One mystery has now been solved.
Created by Taylor Sheridan, the hit Paramount neo-Western premiered in 2019, with most storylines wrapped up by the series finale in late December 2026. One mystery the didn't answer, however, is what became of the dinosaur bones Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), discovered on their property back in season 1 before they were stolen.
Speaking to , Grimes now reveals that there was originally a bigger plan for those stolen dinosaur bones that would have played out in the Yellowstone season 2 finale. Kayce was set to go on a solo adventure to recover these bones, but Paramount executives ultimately vetoed the idea, with Grimes guessing that it was because it was too far removed from the titular ranch. Check out his explanation below:
"Absolutely. I got a script where that whole thing came back around. It was the season 2 finale. There was a completely different finale. But, it's basically the politics of the way that television shows work, when you have all these different producers, and you have a network and studio. There were a lot of notes about the original season 2 finale. It was finessed, and the dinosaur bones didn't make the cut, unfortunately.
"I could probably tell you, because it doesn't matter at this point... Basically, Kayce goes on this mission, he just kind of goes off on his own and starts hopping trains, and then he meets a guy who had stolen the bones. It was crazy. It was out of this world. But I think [studio bosses] thought, maybe, it took the story a little too far from the ranch. But I was excited to do it."
Kayce and Tate discovered the bones while unearthing a tree stump in season 1, episode 2. The bones were seemingly then stolen, but they were never seen or mentioned again. There have long been questions about why it was included in the first place if it wasn't going to serve any storytelling purpose, and it's one of the few plot points from the show that was truly abandoned.
Though viewers will now never get to see Kayce's train-hopping adventure play out on screen, Grimes' comments at least serve as some form of closure for the storyline. Sheridan, it seems, did have a plan for the bones, but studio politics just got in the way.
Kayce's quest to recover the bones may have been too far afield from the core Yellowstone story for executives, but the character is now shining on his own in Marshals, his very own spinoff. Kayce returns in the gritty procedural, leaving the Yellowstone ranch to chart his own path in life, away from his family.
The has been a major viewership hit so far, with the premiere becoming the biggest opening for a scripted broadcast series premiere in more than seven years, per . The success of Marshals bodes well for the further expansion of the Sheridan show's universe.
The Madison has also been a hit with viewers following its premiere last month, but this spinoff is more of a spiritual expansion than a sequel, given it features all new characters. Dutton Ranch, on the other hand, will continue the story of Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser), adopting more of a Marshals approach for these two original Yellowstone characters. on May 15.
Grimes is already confirmed to return in the announced Marshals season 2, meaning viewers haven't seen the last of Kayce Dutton. Though Yellowstone's dinosaur bone mystery is in the past, the world of the show will evidently live on into the forseeable future.
