The news that Netflix is developing a TV show based on the games means the streaming service can bring the action genre to new heights. While vying for the title of world’s best Dad TV show alongside Reacher, the streaming service is still lagging behind in other arenas.
Despite the massive success of Prime’s Fallout and HBO’s The Last of Us, Netflix doesn’t have a critically acclaimed live-action video game adaptation of equal fame. Arcane was deservedly acclaimed, but that hit was also animated. Fortunately, the upcoming historical action series Assassin’s Creed can change this by righting a major wrong from the franchise’s history.
Assassin's Creed’s Upcoming Netflix Show Could Be An Action Masterpiece
The center on a centuries-old feud between the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar, with the first five games in the series focusing on the story of former Assassin Desmond Miles. Intriguingly, Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series will reportedly tell an original story set in this universe instead of directly adapting the games.
While this has the potential to be either disastrous or ingenious, it is worth noting that the storylines of the games are not the only thing that have brought players back to the franchise over and over again. The Assassin’s Creed games are famous for their killer action set-pieces, which rely on subtlety and stealth as much as bravado and fearlessness.
Like the Hitman games before them, the Assassin’s Creed franchise went against the frenzied brutality of many first-person shooters in favor of gameplay that prioritized parkour and stealthy attacks. This means that, ideally could be the best screen depiction of an implacable, unstoppable killer to date.
Netflix’s Adaptation Could Redeem 2016’s Disappointing Assassin's Creed Movie
With a cast that includes Lola Petticrew and supporting roles for Noomi Rapace and Sean Harris, the Assassin’s Creed show has the potential to be truly great. However, while creator Roberto Patino's earlier work on HBO's Westworld is promising, it might be tough for game fans to get excited about the show before it arrives.

In 2016, Snowtown director Justin Kurzel brought the game series to life on the big screen with an adaptation that starred Michael Fassbender, Jeremy Irons, Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael K. Williams. Despite this incredible cast, 2016’s Assassin’s Creed underperformed both financially and critically, leaving fans of the series understandably reticent about a second screen adaptation a decade later.
