and the Matthews family's diabolical discovery of Jim's body, "Fray" took a big step forward in advancing 's mystery. The episode's most notable development, though, was Ethan's encounter with Jim near their RV. Of course, Jim died at , which made the scene mysterious in itself. Yet even more intriguing was what they talked about.

It was clearly a sweet, cathartic moment for Ethan. They shared a hug, and Jim imbued Ethan with love. The legitimacy of the encounter aside, it certainly felt real to Ethan. Then, Jim reminded Ethan of the Lake of Tears, the thing Ethan dreamt about on their very first night in the Township.

In From's pilot episode, Ethan had a seizure upon entering town. After waking up in season 1, episode 2, he described a "lake of tears" that he saw in the form of child-like crayon drawings. Those kinds of drawings were later associated with Victor as a way of documenting his experiences and emotions, though little else was said about the Lake of Tears until .

After some words of encouragement, Jim told Ethan that he needed to do something "very important," and that was to find the Lake of Tears. Ethan's only question was "Why can't we find it together?" but the arrival of Tabitha caused Jim to disappear before he could answer even that. The exchange left many questions about the mysterious Lake of Tears and what exactly Ethan really saw.

Jim's Appearance In From Season 4, Episode 2 Isn't Unprecedented

Deceased townspeople have a history of appearing to characters in moments of need. multiple times. Most recently, the deceased priest tried to talk Boyd out of torturing Elgin. Tom, the town's former bartender, at one point appeared to Jade with some wise words that put him back on track.

These interactions haven't been given a clear explanation, but they don't seem to be figments of people's imagination. More importantly, they seem well-intentioned. In their appearances, the late townspeople have seemed calm, insightful, and intent on guiding people onto the right path.

Interestingly, though, Jim's appearance on a log outside the RV seemed almost separate from Ethan's presence. Jim seemed surprised to see him there. Then, throughout their conversation, Jim was looking over his shoulder, like he was afraid of getting caught or interrupted.

Without any concrete answers, it's possible that this posthumous appearance of Jim was another trick of the Township, but From's history of similar encounters points to a more positive explanation. Jim's surprise at seeing Ethan and somewhat furtive behavior also suggest that he may be stuck in and around the RV, which wouldn't make sense if it wasn't really Jim.

Mainly, though, the scene had a notable warmth that the evil forces of the Township seem incapable of feigning, even when tricking its residents.

The Significance Of The Lake Of Tears

Without further exploration in season 1, the Lake of Tears seemed like a potential red herring, another scary thing about the Township without major significance. However, it being mentioned by the late Jim makes its introduction in season 1 feel very deliberate. The nature of this conversation automatically makes anything discussed memorable and meaningful.

The fact that From returned to something mentioned as early as its second-ever episode suggests that the show has been working towards its conclusion from the very beginning, and is now taking steps towards bringing its story full circle.

It's especially noteworthy that Ethan first learned about the Lake of Tears after having a seizure in the pilot episode. Since then, several other characters have had seizures in From, and season 4 has already made a point to explore their significance. After the now-deceased priest's crash landing in town with Sophia, Marielle observed that he had had a seizure, which "isn't uncommon" in the Township.

Separately, seizures have also been tied to Julie's ability to time-travel. All together, it seems that people in town have unique experiences that lead to seizures, but they are all tied to the Township's supernatural forces. Given that, Ethan's seizure in the pilot episode suggests that his dream about the Lake of Tears was more than just a dream.

From has already begun exploring the world beyond town, suggesting that the real key to escape lies within the forest, where things are scarier and, currently, more unknown. Tabitha discovered the lighthouse, which, when the Boy in White shoved her out of it, proved to be a temporary means of escape. The lighthouse is a crucial piece of From's puzzle, and a lighthouse implies the existence of a body of water.

With Julie "story-walking," Tabitha encountering the lighthouse, and Jim tasking Ethan with finding the Lake of Tears, the show has set up the Matthews family to be at the center of From's big picture. Since the show opened with their arrival in town, it fits the story's cyclical nature that they would be a major part of how it ends. The Lake of Tears will likely be a big part of that, though, for now, it's unclear how.

From's Town Has Supernatural Forces Of Good And Bad

At this point, From has established that its Township is home to much more than its nocturnal monsters. Working against the townspeople are also , who seems to be the show's big bad, and the ghostly Kimono Woman, who tricked Elgin into trapping Fatima in the cellar. Yet other entities seem interested in helping the people in town, though their methods are often cryptic.

has long been something of a foil to the Man in Yellow. Though he generally does little more than point or speak in vague sentences, he's guided the townspeople towards discoveries that greatly increased their understanding of the town. of a sacrifice that allowed the nocturnal monsters to live forever.

From depicts these forces of good and evil with noticeable differences in tone. Even though Elgin genuinely thought listening to the Kimono Woman would allow them to escape, that storyline was saturated with unease and brought out the worst in everyone involved.

Meanwhile, Jade and Tabitha's exploration of the Bottle Tree had a hopeful energy and saw all the characters at their best. Jim finally loosened his overprotective grip on his family and proved to be the missing link to Jade's manic obsession with the numbers. The anghkooey children, after successfully guiding them towards their meaningful discovery, now have a harmless, heartbreaking effect.

The apparitions of deceased townspeople like Jim and Father Khatri seem to be among these supernatural forces of good. They don't offer instant promises of escape, but they do help the characters be their best selves, and, while mysterious, their scenes have a definitively non-threatening feel.

The show has made some major discoveries in its most recent episodes, but the characters certainly still have much more to learn before they're able to put all the pieces together. The late Jim may have just set Ethan on the right path, but that doesn't mean there won't be strife along the way. Only time will tell what From's Lake of Tears has in store.
