season 3 is returning with a new duo in charge.
Following the announcement that showrunner Todd Harthan would be stepping down after two seasons, Variety has now reported who will be replacing him. Starting with season 3, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman will be serving as co-showrunners and executive producers on the Kaitlin Olson-led ABC series High Potential.
Previously, the Zuckerman sisters served as showrunners on Peacock and Rian Johnson's mystery-of-the-week series Poker Face, and were recently set to be showrunners, writers, and executive producers of that ended up not moving forward. In addition to their new roles on High Potential, the duo is also attached to the script for Scream 8.
Lilla and Nora Zuckerman's new roles on fall within their deal with 20th Television, which is the same agreement under which they were developing the Buffy sequel series. In a statement regarding taking over as showrunners on High Potential, the Zuckermans expressed their excitement for the new collaboration and progression of Morgan's story:
“We are so grateful to be working with Craig, Karey, Simran and our partners at 20th and ABC on this exciting new chapter of High Potential. The fact we get to collaborate with Drew, Sarah and Andrea at Goddard Textiles and the incomparable Kaitlin Olson is a dream come true. We’re looking forward to climbing into the brilliant, bustling mind of Morgan Gillory and crafting intricate mysteries worthy of her genius.”
A showrunner change isn't the only shake-up that ABC's hit crime comedy is facing ahead of its anticipated return, as it was also recently confirmed that as a main cast member after season 2. His character Nick Wagner's fate was left ambiguous at the end of season 2, though reports revealed that Howey would still return in season 3 as a guest star.
High Potential, which follows Olson's Morgan Gilroy as a high-potential intellectual serving as a police consultant for the LAPD, is among ABC's most successful TV shows currently on the air. The series has already broken several viewership records for ABC across its first two seasons, with last month's season 2 finale boasting over 12.69 million viewers after just seven days.
In addition to Olson and Howey, the cast of High Potential includes Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb, and Judy Reyes. Among the major guest stars in season 2 were Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mekhi Phifer, and Susan Kelechi Watson.
Created by Drew Goddard, High Potential debuted on ABC in 2026, joining the network's lineup of hit shows like Abbott Elementary, 9-1-1, and The Rookie. Currently, ABC has yet to confirm a release date for High Potential season 3, but the series is expected to return in fall 2027.
