Elliot Stabler finally comments on his future.
As the draws to a close, networks are starting to map out what the next fall will look like for them. While CBS has officially unveiled their fall roster, its peers are still sorting out renewals and cancellations. For NBC that includes finally ordering Law & Order: SVU season 28, weeks after Ice-T floated the idea that they would be coming back. Unfortunately, for Chris Meloni's Law & Order: Organized Crime, the road ends with season 5.
In March 2026, news broke out that, after almost a decade since , he was finally coming back. Instead of rejoining his old team, however, his cameo in the Mariska Hargitay-led procedural was just a stepping stone for his own spinoff, which ended up being Law & Order: Organized Crime. This allowed the character to have his own story while also developing his dynamic with Olivia Benson. Four seasons on NBC and one on Peacock later, the offshoot is officially done.
Hours after Law & Order: Organized Crime's cancellation, posted a message on his official Instagram account to react to the news for the very first time. It sounded like he had just found out about the news on the internet — much like the rest of the fans did. Clearly emotional, he thanked everyone who made the show possible and more importantly, those who allowed him to play Stabler for 17 years. Watch the video below:
has understandably sparked a strong response from fans of the series. While the show found a solid base, it's no secret that it struggled to keep a creative team in place since the beginning. Had it been renewed for a sixth year, it would have to recruit a brand new showrunner that would oversee the series. Considering its move to Peacock, continuing the procedural wouldn't eat prime real estate from NBC's primetime schedule, so its cancellation suggests that the brass don't see a future for the project.
The question now is whether Stabler will simply just move back to Law & Order: SVU to continue his story. While his spinoff didn't come close to the success of the NBC premier offering, there's no denying that the character continues to be very popular. On top of following his personal arc, Stabler's ongoing will-they/won't-they dynamic with Benson has been fueling the Law & Order franchise, and it would be a shame if it doesn't get any kind of definitive payoff.

With Law & Order: SVU season 28 now confirmed, NBC has the time to figure out how to incorporate Stabler into its storytelling. That said, whatever the network decides on, fans will have to wait until the next cycle to find out. For now, they can watch the entirety of Law & Order: Organized Crime on Peacock.
