The undisputed perfect Leon Vance's replacement in leaves Timothy McGee no choice but to finally exit MCRT. CBS's premier procedural has had a very busy . The ongoing year has seen the show undergo some major milestones, including the return of Ellie Bishop and its first-ever crossover with NCIS Origins season 2. Nothing ever prepared viewers of the show, however, to what went down in NCIS's 500th episode, "All Good Things."

Going into the major feat, there was already an expectation that it would change the course of the project moving forward based on the show's record and the teases from the people involved. Tying to the show's second case tackled by Leroy Jethro Gibbs' original MCRT team, the case coincided with — a bombshell revealed in the previous episode. As if those weren't enough, "All Good Things" ended the hour with the unexpected death of Vance, leaving the Director of NCIS post vacant.

Per "Fleeting," there will be an interim director filling for Vance as the agency sorts out itself. The show has yet to show who this temporary leader will be, but it's safe to say that he will be that — a temporary post. That's because McGee is the indisputable ideal person to take over the role. Having been in the agency for over two decades, he has dedicated all that time to becoming its top agent, with most of those years spent under the legendary Gibbs.

McGee has long been due for a promotion, but the previous agency set-up left him no room for upward mobility. After turning down the initial opportunity to lead MCRT, the role was eventually awarded to Alden Parker, who has been doing a tremendous job. With Vance's twist death, CBS can keep Gary Cole's character in his current position and have McGee become the agency's overall leader in . While there will be some growing pains, he has handled the job a few times in the past, as he was tapped to fill in when the late director would be out of office.

While Vance was always confident in McGee's abilities, he reinforced that during NCIS's 500th episode. As he recalled his final day with disguised Ducky Mallard as the Angel of Death, he pointed out how Sean Murray's character has always had a knack for leadership. Had things been different, and he could have had a less tragic end to his storied career, there's no doubt that he would have personally chosen McGee to be his successor, and one would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would oppose that decision.

McGee Becoming NCIS's Director Forces Him To Leave MCRT

At this point, it's only a matter of time before NCIS officially gives McGee the promotion that he deserves. Not doing so sooner will result in more issues with the character's handling — something that the show has been dealing with for the past few years. At one point, it even felt like . Letting this opportunity pass can once again haunt it moving forward. The only drawback to this change is that McGee is forced to leave his post with the MCRT.

While the main NCIS team is part of the bigger agency umbrella, Gibbs and then Parker's team is the core characters of the show. Vance's involvement was limited to managerial work or if something massive went down that he had to be involved. He had gone on the field several times throughout his time with NCIS, but they were rare in the grand scheme of things. Moving up to Vance's office will mean that McGee will have to follow in his predecessor's footsteps — unless CBS makes some changes to how the agency is being run.
