Two years ago, Nicole Kidman released a hit murder mystery series called The Perfect Couple. It was beachy, frothy fun with knowingly campy performances from Kidman, Dakota Fanning, and the rest of . Though the show was based on a standalone Elin Hilderbrand novel and intended as a miniseries, it was such a hit with viewers that Netflix has greenlit a second season.

So, what did Kidman, who also served as executive producer via her company Blossom Films, get for delivering a thoroughly entertaining, bingeable show? Multiple articles criticizing "" and asking, ""

Her detractors have a point: many of cast her as a wealthy, cashmere-wearing woman with a big secret and an even bigger home — Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Expats, etc. Yet, however formulaic, this Kidman TV character trope has proven a huge hit with audiences, or else her shows wouldn't be so popular.

It's curious that so many media outlets are concerned with Kidman making "too much" of a popular product, especially when considering that it took about 15 years for people to get tired of the MCU, another hitmaker largely built on formula. However, despite releasing two new series in 2026, Scarpetta and , criticism over Kidman's prolific television output remained minimal.

Reviews for Scarpetta weren't exactly glowing, but perhaps the Prime Video series being more of a gritty murder mystery than Kidman's typical fare was enough of a distinction. On the other hand, was through the roof, with the Apple TV miniseries scoring an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

of the same name, and is the rare Kidman series not featuring the actress as the lead. That distinction goes to Elle Fanning as the titular broke and pregnant college dropout, who becomes an OnlyFans creator to support her baby. Kidman does appear in a supporting role, however, and it's one of the most brilliant moves of her career.

Margo's Got Money Troubles Is Nicole Kidman's Best TV Move Yet

Lace (Nicole Kidman) in a wrestling ring in Margo's Got Money Troubles

Margo's Got Money Troubles audiences who didn't read the book may have been confused when Kidman, whose name is in the opening credits as an executive producer, didn't appear in the show's first three episodes. However, she finally shows up in episode 4, "Buddies."

In the , Kidman plays Lace, a friend of Jinx (Nick Offerman) from his wrestling days. Though Lace is in full wrestling regalia when she bumps into Jinx and Margo at a convention, she reveals that she's now a practicing lawyer — and thus, someone who will come in handy when Margo has to fight for custody of Bodhi.

Though Kidman played a (retired) lawyer before in Big Little Lies, Lace stands apart from the actress's typical TV characters. There's no glass of wine in hand, no cashmere to wrap herself in, and as far as we know, Lace doesn't live in a palatial seaside home. She's a working woman with ties to the wrestling community; she's scrappy and tough, not polished and poised.

Kidman's performance also stands apart because it's so much smaller than her other TV roles. Lace is a fully defined character, but she exists entirely in Margo's story, whereas other supporting characters like Jinx and Margo's mom, , have their own storylines.

It's a brilliant move for Kidman to step away from her "beach read" characters, not to satisfy her critics but to spread her wings as an executive producer. By taking a backseat role in Margo's Got Money Troubles, Kidman is opening up the types of shows Blossom Films can produce, thus giving the company the ability to grow its empire even further.

This isn't to say that Kidman should hang up her cashmere anytime soon — personally, I hope she makes 100 more "beach read" shows because they're so much fun. However, by showing versatility in her TV projects, she ultimately proves those who think she's "making too much TV" so, so wrong.

What's Next For Nicole Kidman's TV Career

Nicole Kidman as Celeste Wright in Big Little Lies

It's very likely Nicole Kidman will be back on our TV screen at least one more time before the year ends. , Taylor Sheridan's hit Paramount+ series in which Kidman plays CIA Clandestine Service supervisor Kaitlyn Meade, wrapped in March. It's expected the season will premiere later this year.

Kidman really is one of the hardest-working people in show business because, in the same month that Lioness season 3 finished production, she also started filming . Kidman leads the cast of Scarpetta as the titular forensic psychologist and medical examiner. The show, which is based on Patricia Cornwell's long-running novel series, was given a two-season order from Amazon, though based on the source material, it has the ability to run even longer.

However, perhaps the most exciting development is that Kidman will return to the series that officially ignited her TV career, Big Little Lies. Though the polarizing Big Little Lies season 2 ended way back in 2019, last year, it was officially confirmed that HBO had greenlit . Kidman and her co-star and fellow executive producer, Reese Witherspoon, are returning alongside series creator David E. Kelley, who is also the creator of Margo's Got Money Troubles.

Premiering in 2017, Big Little Lies is based on the bestselling Liane Moriarty novel of the same name. It centers on five affluent women living seemingly perfect lives in a coastal California town who become embroiled in a murder. Kidman plays Celeste Wright, who has the most enviable life on the surface — she's the wealthiest and has adorable twin boys with her dreamboat husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgård). However, behind closed doors, Celeste's marriage is one of extreme abuse.

Circumstances change dramatically for Celeste throughout the series, and season 3 will see her and the rest of the Monterey Five now the mothers of teenagers. The new installment will be based on Moriarty's upcoming sequel novel, Big Little Truths, and is planned to commence in the fall. Between promoting the rest of Margo's Got Money Troubles and all of her TV projects, Kidman is one busy professional — and I couldn't be happier about it.
