Rodan's surprise return in opens the door for a dream matchup in the Monsterverse's near future. Seven years after Rodan's Monsterverse debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the King of the Skies made an appearance in the final scene of the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 finale. Lee Shaw spotted him roosting at the peak of a volcano in Thailand.
It would seem that after Kentaro Randa and Isabel Simmons failed to use Titan X to get rid of Kong, they've shifted their attention to another Titan, namely Rodan. On Skull Island, they intended to gain access to its Axis Mundi rift for the purpose of manipulating the past. By all indications, Rodan lives atop another Axis Mundi rift that the pair will seek to gain entrance to in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 3.
That , possibly to the same extent that Titan X was a part of the Apple TV show's second season. The upcoming season could see Monarch, Lee Shaw, and Isabel Simmons' mysterious new group all converging on Rodan, whose resting place could be the battleground for future Titan battles.
As for what those monster fights could be, one possible option would deliver a showdown that's long been discussed by fans of the franchise, but so far, only in a hypothetical sense.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 3 Can Feature A Kong Vs. Rodan Fight
For years, there's been speculation about the power structure of the Titans in the Monsterverse and how they compare to one another. One of the most interesting debates pertains to what would happen if Kong fought Rodan. Rodan missed out on both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, so a scenario where that fight would play out hasn't really been on in the table, but after the season 2 finale, it feels like a real possibility.
Granted, there's yet to be any direct setup for such a battle, but both Titans have now brought into the show's story, with Kong showing up at the end of season 1 and Rodan now getting drawn into the equation in season 2's final scene. Unless Monarch: Legacy of Monsters pushes Kong aside now that the Titan X story is over, there could be room for the two monsters to finally come to blows.
Of course, the Monsterverse is limited by the timeline in terms of how that fight could be facilitated. The show hasn't advanced to the point where Kong leaves Skull Island in Godzilla vs. Kong, which means the battle must take place on Skull Island. Rodan getting to Skull Island is technically possible since there must be an Axis Mundi rift within the volcano he's nesting in. Otherwise, Kentaro and Isabel wouldn't be looking for him.
Since Skull Island is - as it was referred to in the show - "Grand Central Station" for Axis Mundi, it's not implausible that Rodan makes it there if he winds up in the underground world. And getting him into could even be a part of their plan, especially since Kentaro and Isabel would need Rodan either gone or defeated if they're to gain control over any rift that exists inside the volcano.
Would Rodan Have A Chance At Beating Kong?
As one of the alpha Titans of the Monsterverse, Kong would most likely be the favorite in a matchup with Rodan if it really were to transpire in a potential third season of the series. But while Kong is indeed a force to be reckoned with, Rodan shouldn't be taken lightly either. as a "winged A-bomb" that's comparable in power to Godzilla in his own way, Rodan most assuredly has what it takes to push Kong to his limits.
It's important to note that unlike Godzilla, Kong would be at an extreme advantage when faced with a flying Titan. Godzilla can use his atomic breath to strike down airborne opponents, but Kong has no such weapons in his arsenal, and would have to wait for Rodan to come close, but the Titan flies at such devastatingly fast speeds, Kong would be hard-pressed to stand up to or stop a dive-bombing attack.
In any case, a battle between Rodan and Kong in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has the potential to be one of the Monsterverse's most interesting fights to date.
