Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie on The Boys, is about to star in an adaptation of one of the most iconic stories from DC comics. Though his place in the has Jack Quaid hunting superheroes down, he plays one of the most famous superheroes of all time in DC. Quaid voices Superman in the animated series , a role he's been playing since 2026.

Quaid has gotten quite a bit of attention for his performance in My Adventures with Superman. The show is consistently ranked among the , it's praised for its comic accuracy and overall quality, and Quaid's voice is frequently cited as fitting with the show's animation style and tone. The show has also been a commercial success, with My Adventures with Superman season 3 in production and a spinoff show, My Adventures with Green Lantern, already in the works.

Now, My Adventures with Superman is also set to adapt one of the most famous Superman comics of all time. Previously, the show took inspiration from a wide variety of Superman comics (via EW), but didn't directly adapt any story in particular. For season 3, however, the creators of My Adventures with Superman have revealed that the show will be tackling a specific comic, and a very famous one at that.

My Adventures With Superman Is Adapting Reign Of The Supermen

Jake Wyatt, the series' showrunner, revealed that . "Reign of the Supermen" directly followed the iconic "Death of Superman" comic from 1993. In the story arc, after Superman supposedly died in his battle against Doomsday, four new Supermen emerged in Metropolis and began vying for power.

Those Supermen included Cyborg Superman, aka Hank Henshaw, Superboy, aka Conner Kent, the Eradicator, and Steel. Eventually, as the story arc progressed, readers learned that Cyborg Superman was out to destroy Superman's legacy, and that the original Superman was actually alive but powerless in the Fortress of Solitude. Eventually, Superman regains his power and settles the dispute about who the real Superman is.

"Reign of the Supermen" has since become one of the most influential Superman comics in recent decades. The story arc got a full movie treatment in the straight-to-DVD animated film Reign of the Supermen in 2019. Zack Snyder's Justice League also incorporated elements of "Reign of the Supermen," most notably Superman's resurrection after a fight with Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and his black suit.

My Adventures With Superman Is Making A Few Changes To Reign Of The Supermen

As with The Boys, Jack Quaid's other comic book adaptation, My Adventures with Superman season 3 won't be afraid to take some creative liberties while adapting "Reign of the Supermen." The most obvious change from the original comics is the context of the story. "Reign of the Supermen" takes place shortly after Superman was presumed dead while fighting Doomsday, but Superman won't be dead in My Adventures with Superman season 3.

with Superman defeating Brainiac, not Doomsday, and that fight didn't end with his death. Given how "Reign of the Supermen" directly follows "The Death of Superman" in the original comic run, the animated show is clearly taking a new spin on the story. That's certainly not unprecedented; the 2019 Reign of the Supermen movie made several changes to the comics, and Zack Snyder's Justice League only took small inspirations from the comics instead of directly adapting it.

My Adventures with Superman season 3 is set to premiere on Adult Swim on June 13th, and it will be available to stream next-day on HBO Max.

As Wyatt put it, My Adventures with Superman season 3 is "less Death [of Superman] and more about, 'What's a Superman?'" Evidently, the show is less concerned with the mystery aspects of "Reign of the Supermen," likely because of its now iconic and well-known status. Instead, My Adventures with Superman will be exploring how Superman reacts to impostors wielding the same power he has, as well as the arrival of Superboy.

Given My Adventures with Superman's stellar track record, it's safe to assume the series will do the "Reign of the Supermen" comics justice. All good adaptations brings something new to the original story, and this show seems poised to do the same. With any luck, My Adventures with Superman season 3 will be able to make one of the most iconic Superman stories of the last half-century even better.
