The most formidable adversary for Homelander (Antony Starr) in season 5 isn't the titular group of characters.

with Homelander in control of not only Vought, but the United States government, with President Steven Calhoun (David Andrews) as his puppet. An army of superpowered individuals loyal to Homelander has now been legally authorized to round up select individuals, including the Boys. This ascension in power was only made possible by Sister Sage (Susan Heyward), whose unparalleled intelligence allows her to be numerous steps ahead of everyone else.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for The Boys season 5, Heyward teases how Sister Sage's lack of fear when it comes to Homelander makes her a dangerous adversary for him. She is confident in her long-term plan and how successfully it has been executed so far. Colby Minifie, who plays Ashley Barrett, mentions another important element for Sister Sage's confidence as well. Check out their comments below:

Susan Heyward: Well, I think one of the fun things about playing Sister Sage is the lack of fear for Homelander. Of course, the mortal desire to stay alive is in there somewhere, but when we find her at the beginning of season four, she's kind of signed off of life. She's kind of signed off of risk. So she kind of has nothing to lose. She's finally in the game of power. And she has absolutely nothing to lose. Worst comes to work, he lasers her head. Okay. I really do think part of her calm heartbeat is knowing that she has a plan and knowing what she wants and knowing that she's already gone farther than anyone else would've given her the opportunity to. So let's see what happens.

Colby Minifie: It's also like when you have the long line of history in your head at all times, it's like, "Oh. It's fine."

Homelander and Sister Sage's relationship is a complicated one, as they have been working together, but they each have their own agendas. Sister Sage's dynamic with Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) in gives a glimpse of her schemes that don't involve Homelander. She is also in the unique position of being someone Homelander will actually listen to and obey, as he usually attempts to kill, torture, or otherwise hurt anyone who disagrees with him and doesn't follow his lead.

Heyward's comments confirm that Sister Sage will continue to walk this fine line in season 5, with her lack of fear being its own secret weapon, and posing a different kind of threat to Homelander than the Boys do. This will involve her now being the CEO of Vought instead of Ashley, which was confirmed in Gen V season 2. Being CEO puts Sister Sage in a more public position, something she has not been fond of in the past, as she prefers maneuvering behind the scenes and watching the results unfold.

marks the end of the hit Prime Video series, meaning it will be revealed whether Sister Sage's full plan ultimately fails or succeeds. With Homelander being the main antagonist, and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) having been fixated on killing him from the start, his defeat seems inevitable in the final season, but Sister Sage's fate is less certain. She was only introduced in season 4, but quickly became one of the show's most important power players.
