In an overall update about Netflix's slate of original series and production from Argentina, reveals that The Eternaut season 2 is in “advanced development” and that work is underway even though cameras are not yet filming. Additionally, it's mentioned that new episodes are aiming for a 2027 release date.

Francisco Ramos, Netflix's Vice President of Content for Latin America, says the hope at this point is to go big with the upcoming episodes. In the quote below, the VP of Content clarifies where things stand with The Eternaut season 2:

“The ambition has gone to a new level. Stuff is already happening, but it’s not actually with actors on screen, it’s technical with some VFX conceptualization. The actual shoot with the talent on screen, we don’t know the dates yet because it’s way bigger than season 1, not only in budget, but in terms of scope and conception.”

Although the initial plan for the comic book adaptation was to run for only two seasons, building on , Ramos explains that there is some discussion about crafting season 2 in a way that would leave the door open to a potential season 3:

“We need to figure out how we deliver on everything that is expected to be delivered in season 2, while yet being able to continue with it for a potential season 3.”

Created by Bruno Stagnaro and consisting of six episodes, unfolds in Buenos Aires. It takes focus in the aftermath of a mysterious snowfall, which swiftly and shockingly kills most of the population. Thousands do manage to survive, but life is a struggle. Things only get worse when it's revealed that the catastrophic event happened because of an alien invasion.

With a that includes Ricardo Darín, Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, Ariel Staltari, Marcelo Subiotto, Mora Fisz, Claudio Martínez Bel, and Orianna Cárdena, the sci-fi dystopia garnered positive reviews. It sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 19 reviews, with several critics praising the performances and the balance between providing thrillers and being able to consistently build character.

Combining the alien elements of War of the Worlds and the dystopia of Silo, the latest update means that curious viewers still have time to catch up with a show that caught genre fans by surprise when it premiered last April. Plus, with the news that there still might be a few seasons on the way, it sounds like the saga of The Eternaut is only at the starting point.

All episodes of The Eternaut season 1 are on Netflix.
