Apple TV's is set on the titular offshore New England island and immediately positions itself as a memorable horror location, and it may have viewers wondering if it's actually real. The island of Widow's Bay is a dark, wet, lonely island, though Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is convinced he can make it into a Bar Harbor-like tourist destination.

The island of Widow's Bay is a fictional creation, but it's a fantastic one. Like Camp Crystal Lake; Derry, Maine; Silent Hill; or Crockett Island, Widow's Bay feels lived-in and old, filled with a dark history that makes it the perfect setting for a show about people-snatching fog and evil clowns.

Mayor Loftis isn't making things up when he says it could be a lovely vacation destination, either. , even more so with Widow's Bay, where cute coffee shops sit alongside restaurants with names like the "Salty Whale".

It's a place you might like to visit, even if you're not one of those people who like to take tours of Amityville or Salem, Massachusetts. Though you can't actually go to Widow's Bay, the island has some real-life inspirations, many of which are worth visiting themselves.

Where Apple TV's Widow's Bay Show Was Filmed

As a New England island, it won't surprise you to hear that Widow's Bay was filmed on the New England coast, entirely within Massachusetts. It's not made clear which state Widow's Bay belongs to, but Loftis saying he spent half the year in Massachusetts as a child suggests the island is part of the Bay State.

The series used an Essex, MA restaurant, Vita Bella Ristorante, as a filming location, possibly as the upscale Salty Whale that Loftis insists stay open to impress a NYT journalist (Bashir Salahuddin) (via ). A Worcester bar, Vincent's Bar, serves as one of the few watering holes on the island (via ).

Most of the filming for the show was done in Rockport, MA, specifically on the Bearskin Neck peninsula (via ). An early scene of Loftis' son, Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick), smoking in a car was shot at White Wharf in Rockport's old harbor. Berlin's historic Town Hall serves as Widow's Bay's Town Hall.

The local harbor we see throughout the show is Lane's Cove on the northern side of Gloucester. The exterior of the Salty Whale appears to be a former art gallery called Dark Star Philosophia. Widow's Bay Inn's exterior is the Lorenzo Maynard's mansion in Maynard, 25 miles northwest of Boston. The church is Martha-Mary Chapel in Sudbury, MA.

What Inspired The Town Of Widow's Bay For The Apple TV Show

Kate Dippold, the creator of Widow's Bay, has said she was inspired by her time growing up in New Jersey in the 1980s (via ). She and her friends would often walk by a supposedly haunted house in town, and Dippold tried to capture that communal feeling of fear that would inevitably lead to laughter.

There are plenty of other inspirations to be found as well, with Jaws being an obvious one. Both the show and Spielberg's shark film involve a small town mayor trying to attract tourists to their beach community, despite the obvious danger that is looking them in the face.

Stephen King appears to be an influence as well, with Widow's Bay feeling like one of the small towns you find in his novels, like Home Delivery, where an island bunkers down to fight off a zombie apocalypse. Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass also seems to be an inspiration. Widow's Bay is very much its own story, however, and Dippold manages to craft a unique place and plot in a crowded genre.
